How would you rate my system?

Hi guys.

This is my first Hi-Fi system (which has already seen a few upgrades in its time!)

I know it's not audiophile level stuff, but I think it sounds good!

My system is as follows:-

Technics SU-Z55 Integrated Stereo Amplifier
Rotel RT-850AL Tuner
Denon DR-M10HX Cassette Deck
Denon DRS-640 Cassette Deck
Cambridge Audio CD4 Special Edition CD Player
JVC QL-A5R turntable (currently not set up as I'm getting a new cartridge sorted Friday)
A pair of Pioneer Prologue 30 speakers (8" bass drivers)

As I say, I know it isn't particularly "audiophile" grade, but to me it sounds awesome! As I also said, it's my first proper system and is constantly being upgraded with new bits and pieces (it's an addiction, isn't it?)

What do you think?

Haha thanks! I know my little system wouldn't hold a candle to some of the equipment that some of the rest of you AK'ers have, but this system has cost me WAY under £200 so far!

I shall post pictures once my laptop is up-and-running properly again!

Stereo Systems

Cool setup. I like your Denon DR-M10HX {1987}. I have the Denon DR-M10HR {1987} that i bought in early 1988 $260.00 on sale. Never had any issues nor it has never been in any repair shop. Just normal cleaning of the heads after 8 hours of playback as suggested by the manufacturer and interval inside cleaning {dust} and light lubricating any moving parts.:thmbsp:

Denon DR-M10HR

Awesome cassette deck. Not the high end "audiophile" but sounds as good as it is. Not everyone's hearing is the same or has 20/20 normal vision. For my age my hearing is very good maybe a tab too sensitive. I sometime use my JBL over the ear headphones at a normal volume not too loud. Never inside the ear headphones as it will in time impact your hearing.

I bought both the Denon DR-M10HX and the Rotel tuner from a seller on Fleabay last year for just over £5 each (collection in person), which I was mega pleased with, as they appear to be decent quality machines and in very good condition. I must invest in a cleaning kit for my cassette decks, as well as CD player. I'm too worried I'll mess something up, so I don't like the idea of opening the devices up to lubricate!

I'm guilty of using in-ear phones regularly with my phone - I listen to music whilst walking to work or when I used to go to college. I try to keep the volume to a sensible level, though. Listening to the KH83s is a lot more comfortable, though (even though I usually just use the speakers!)

I've replaced my tape deck with a MacMini to manage my itunes collection and an iPod Touch to play it through a dock to the system. I can control the iPod remotely with my phone or iPad and the SQ is as good as most tape cassettes. For critical / better listening I spin LPs. I find as I go forward I have less needs for multiple sources.

If you like your system, your system is awesome. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Mine is better (Chuckle ha ha) ..............than it was a few years back because I learn a bit and improve a bit as time goes on. People kept talking about '3D sound stage' and 'Air' in the recording. And I went looking for it. Found some too.

Enjoy the music. If you get an itch, read and explore. Start by moving your speakers around the room. Placement can make a huge difference.

Luckily for me I don't know anyone with a "true" audiophile system (then again... what defines a "true" audiophile system? :scratch2: ) so I think I'm safe. Yes, you're right, I'm addicted enough as it is (then again, there are certainly worse things to be addicted to!)

I have a buddy that has some insane gear. Speakers made of stone, crazy high priced amps, high end preamp, high end cd player. He had been talking about it for years but I had never been to his place so I hadn't heard it. (Buddy=cool guy in a group, Friend=person who I can spend hours hanging out with and would give my last dollar to if needed.)

So last year I was over his place. My system at the time consisted of a Pioneer SX3700 receiver I picked out of the local dump and cleaned up, a pair of Martin Logan Motion 4 speakers with a cheep sub, and a Technics SL1200Mk2 that has a few mods. The most expensive part of my system is the stylus on the TT. JICO SAS.

My system blows his away. The detail and sound stage I get from the Motion tweeters and JICO SAS is huge, with my eyes closed, it is twice as big as my room. His system was nice. No doubt. But it lacked the depth I get. No 'air'. The only place he trumped my system was the bass. His subs were fast, deep and precise. That was a bit of beauty.

My opinion, OP, is your system is just fine. Many purists would be happy with a system like that. The question is, do YOU like it? If you, then all is right with the world.

Listening to other systems is tricky. What made their system sound "different" or "Better" or "Worse" than yours? Room acoustics? Power Output? Speakers? Audio Source? The mood you were in that day? All those things contribute. The only fair way to listen to multiple systems and get an honest gauge of comparing them is to listen to them in the same room at the same time with the same reference series speakers, then move on from there. Otherwise, you'll drive yourself crazy.

In any event, enjoy that system. I sure would.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Hi-Fi. I spend a lot of time using the system! The reason I say it's probably not audiophile is because I've not spent the thousands of pounds/dollars that some people do on my system... But, as many people say, it's what the system sounds like to me... And to me, it sounds awesome!

I wholeheartedly agree with you, though. There are many factors outside of just the equipment that effect how it sounds and whether you'd like the setup.

Headphones

I also have ear buds by JBL. I also keep it to a low level. If i can hear my surroundings then i know i have it just right. I always hear someone blasting out music and i can hear the song too. Just a matter of time. :nono:
