In the posts here lately? Picked up a PMA-757, Integrated amp, 80WPC. Seems to be well built. Built in 1984.

Whats the concensus on the vintage Denon stuff, sound quality? Build quality?

Well it's probably pretty good. I know their stuff now adays is just glorified black plastic stuff.

Hell, everything today is glorified plastic poop, or it's just poop.

Sorry not much help am I. I have never had to rebuild anything by them so I don't know anything about it really.
 
FWIW, I disagree about Denon being BPC. Denon's upper lines are very well made, and chock-full of the latest technology.

Note that Denon, Marantz and McIntosh are all owned by D&M Holdings, and they share technology. While neither of the others is made anything like Mc, they are much more reasonably priced.

In particular, Denon's DVD players are very highly regarded (2900, 5910) and their TOTL HT Receiver, the 5803 (?), is widely regarded as the king of that breed.

Even if you don't like HT, and think that anything digital is a form of crap (many here do), you should at least acknowledge when a mfr is trying hard. There's plenty of BPC out there, but I think Denon is one of the least deserving of that description. YMMV.
 
Hi have a couple of Denon DCD-1500 cd players made in 1987 and a DCD-1800R (1985). IMO, great sounding cd players.
 
I agree with Negotiableterms. The current upper-end Denons are very nice. I have the 2910 universal player and like it very much. No cheap plastic here.
 
Denon is like a lot of company's, they have built a lot of really nice stuff and a few that you can pass on. I'm with crooner, the 2910 and the current line of upper end units are very nice. Their phono carts have lot's of fans.
 
I am using a Denon POA-2200, 200 wpc, amplifier and it is a real beast!
An excellent amp and it sounds great. I also have the PRA-1100 preamp, and it is also very nice (mine is without the door that hides most of the controls).
I have often commented here about the 2200 and its fine attributes. Have it mated with the Kenwood Basic C2 preamp and the Pioneer HPM-900 speaker systems.
 
I picked up a POA 2400 ampllifier for $100 a couple weeks ago and it's built like a brick shithouse and sounds great. 200 wpc as well. I think Denon has been doing audio as good as most any company you could compare them with both current and vintage stuff.

My modded denon PMA-2000R has retired greats such as my sansui au-11000, au-d11II, 9090db.
It sounds better than my modded Sansui B-2101&Belles DMC pre combo.

In fact my pma-2000r is the favorite of my units I own or have owned.
It also compared favorably (read sounds better) than the musical fidelity a100, and the linn lk2.
It has also bested my current lineup of pioneer as well being the flakey sx-1010 I had, sx-950,sx-850,qx-949, the sansui qrx-7500, and a couple of lesser luxmans.
FYI, all of the units I am comparing the denon to have been recently serviced and completely re-capped so I believe I am hearing them as they should be heard.

I guess what I am saying is that you are doing yourself a disservice if you rule out the denon brand without actually investigating it IMO.

I recently picked up a Denon 5 disc changer on epay. I couldn't believe I got it for $9.99 plus shipping. :scratch2:
 
I'll chime in here, speaking as one who sells Denon, the 3805/6 and up are all well built receivers! Their DVD players are also solid... Here's your useless bit of info for the day - Denon did the first digital recording in the '60s and they are the only company not paying royalties to Sony/Philips for CD player technology.

I have a Denon DRM3 cassette player from 82'. Excellent well built machine. Had a pioneer ct f950 and dumped it because it was always breaking down :thumbsdn: . The denon is sooo much better :thmbsp: !
 
I also have their 2910 DVD player. . .Love it. . .

They are all good providing you buy a good one regardless of the brand. . . A 500 dollar receiver is a 500 dollar receiver etc. . .
 
I have a Denon DRA935R, the TOTL receiver at that time and I was happy using it for several years.... until I got the Pioneer SX-5590 and now the SX-1250 which is the same in silver. Since then, the Denon is stored away because it can't compete to the Pioneer. The tech data is not far away, but sonicaly it is a bif difference :music:
 
I have a Denon DCD-1530 CD player that I love, I have a DRM-44HX cassette deck that I think is the best anyone ever made. I would rather have it than any Nakamichi. I have a Denon TU-500 tuner that is built like spacecraft hardware, A DR-F6 cassette deck that is well built and makes great recordings. I have one of their lower end decks, the DRM-10, that I found at a thrift store. A bit of cleaning and it has been singing away at work, sounding great. I have a friend who has one of the inegrateds, possibly the same one you have, playing through Signet SL-280 speakers, it sounds sweet as heck. Their stuff is well made and sounds very good. Denon has always given you alot of bang for the buck. Denon has alot of fans here. If you search on Denon you will find lots of enthusiastic posts. :tresbon:
 
I don't know the facts for sure, but I've always had the impression that Denon came onto the scene in the 80s and after. Most of the vintage SS buzz here started with the 70s stuff, hence the reason that Denon might not get the number of search hits here as the other mainstream brands

Well now the can of worms is blasted open for good! Denon has been making above average audio for decades, and is at the top of the AVR market for good reason. Very few other manufacturers can offer such a balance of features, reliability, and ease of use.
