Hi,

Im currently lying in a hospital bed here being treated for Rhabdo (extreme muscle breakdown from excessive excercise). Anyway... so ive got all the time in the world browsing Craigslist ads trying to find some quality budget speakers until I can save up for some KEF LS50s. Was wondering what you guys would pick. Here are some ads ive found:

Paradigm Titan V.1 $60
Paradigm 3se mk III $80
KEF Q10 $80
Polk Rti4 w stands $100
Paradigm Atom V1 w SB100 sub $100
Energy Connoisseur C2 $135
Monitor Audio Bronze 2 $200

Thanks!

The Atoms with the sub for $100 would be nice. Atoms alone often sell for around $100.

I can attest to the quality of the RTi4's.

To your list, I would add the Sony SS-MB350h, which can be found for a pittance, although they might be considered a bit large for near field.

I 2nd the paridigm atom with the sub - they should sound pretty good!

The sub adds something to bookshelf speakers in a most pleasant way!

Your ears will thank you...

Thanks Halo!

Should have mentioned I was looking for bookshelf speakers in a near field setup.

Will the speakers have their own stands, or will they be on a shelf or desk.
If your intention is to have them on a shelf or desk, take a look at these, Energy Connoisseur C2 mini tower

But if you intend mounting bookshelf speakers on their own stands, take a serious look at these instead, B&W DM330

Add me to the Polk Audio RTi4's list. Very nice sounding speakers. But will need a sub for the full sound.

The Micca MB42X is supposed to be a hell of a little speaker. Minimus 7 killers. New on amazon for $79.99. They have a handful of glowing reviews on the internet but they're still relatively underground. Them plus a sub should have you good.

Note: the X model has a very complicated crossover where the basic MB42 just had a cap for a crossover. The difference in sound is supposed to be pretty huge. Word of mouth is that the X model is the one to go with.

I hope that you are feeling better soon. I highly recommend the PSB Amazing Alphas - They are called amazing for a reason. A nice pronounced bottom end for a small bookshelf enclosure. Grills are not removable.
They are generally priced in the $75-125 range used and in some instances a bit lower with an uninformed seller.
Another candidate is the Mirage FRX-1. I was completely surprised when i first heard them. Similar to the PSB's with a very competent lower end as well.
Good luck in your quest

Hi, I got discharged from the hospital yesterday! I am so glad to be out of there. Two nights in a hospital is two too many, but at least I had plenty of time to do my research! So today I went and auditioned the Monitor Audio Bronze 2 and the Energy Connoisseur C2 I wasn't that impressed with the Monitor Audios I thought they sounded exactly like a small speaker would sound, so I went to take a look at the Energy C2s and I absolutely loved them and ended up taking them home for only $120! These speakers just have a presence to them and the imaging was better than I expected. These were only supposed to be stop gap speakers until I saved up for the KEF LS50 but right now I really don't think I will upgrade them anytime soon. They sound so good for what they are.

One thing I noticed though is I do have to turn my amplifier up to the 11 o'clock & 12 o'clock position to get to the volume I like listening at. Am I getting the most out of these speakers if I have the amp turned up that high?

Thanks!
