I got a box today.

Big Vandies!! Mwahahah...
Well, I found this when I got home.

Well I went to pick it up and was surprised by its weight. "What could it be?" I wondered. So I opened it, inside was.... another box.

So I opened that box, and in a thick lair of bubble wrap was something black, silver, and heavy.

At this point I knew what it was (but you are going to have to wait a few more pictures to know).

It's....

A very beat up and abused Marantz Model 140. Sent to me free of charge by a fellow AKer (not sure if he wants to be named or not).

It has been modified to have 1/4" outputs and was used as a DJ amp for a long time. It is going to be put into service as a PA amp for my band until we get a proper PA amp, then it is going to get fixed up and used as my main amp. Also, it came at a good time because I am not sure how much more abuse my Harmon Kardon PM650 will take. It gets run for hours on end micing vocals and the bass with the volume knob at 2 o'clock. Last band practice you could feel it get hot on top (any hotter and I wouldn't have been able to put my hand on it). For PA speakers we have a set of kickers for a car that I picked up at a garage sale for $20 (I think they are 4 ohm speakers).

Again, thanks to the person who sent it. :thmbsp:

Here are a couple more pictures.

The back of the amp with the 1/4" jacks. I plan on adding 5 way binding posts at some point.

The cover was loose when I got it so I am going to need to find some screws to put it back on, but it was nice to be able to look inside right away. Look at the size of that transformer, no wonder it weighs so much. :yikes:

attachment.php

I think the chassis is a bit bent, or is the transformer supposed to be like that?

and when I turned around from checking out the amp, look what I found in the box it came in.

A most generous gesture.

I'd be afraid to use it for a PA amp out of fear of ruining it - especially since used PA amps can be had relatively cheap, unless you're looking for a monster amp. Not as cheap as free though...

Looks great, x, beat up or not it's still neat:) Your kitty wants to help with the box, heheheh!

It was used as a DJ amp most of its life and has been hacked up with 1/4" jacks added. If it has survived this long it will live through band duty (my HK managed to survive and it is not built anywhere near as nice as this). Once it is done band duty though, it is getting the royal treatment, cleaned up, wood case, probably a recap and then connected to some nice easy to drive 98db/w/m 8 ohm speakers. :thmbsp:

I just tested it out. I put a plug on the end of what was left of its power cord (about 1ft) and set it outside with a GFI and a long extension cord and plugged it in. It didn't blow up and the lights came on so I took it in and tested the DC offset, right was 6.6mv, left was -26mv (not great but usable) so I attached a set of prisidian speakers to the output and my MP3 player to the input and it all works. It has really tight bass, actually made the prisidians sound decent. :thmbsp:

Looks like that amp came from Canada....I see the CSA sticker. You better send it back up here to me.I will pay shipping and I wont tell anyone!:naughty:

I just talked with the person who sent it and he said he wouldn't mind if I outed him, so a public thank you to Dnewma for this very useful amp. :thmbsp:

That amp originated up in Montreal from a garage sale. Dogscanskate sent it to me for free, I traded it to Mike Gibson for an extra Denon DCD-15*0 CDP but by the time I was about to ship, he bought another Mc amp and said to give it to someone else. Almost had it given away to targeteye but he declined in lieu of someone else who needed it more. One night, Jon was talking about needing an amp for his band and he'd been pretty helpful to others, so I had my new victim for that ugly beast. :)

Funny cat, looks exactly like mine, stripes, box and all. :thmbsp:

Wow, I gotta start helping people more. :D
