I Grossly Underpowered my Speakers . . .

that I was putting down another posters choice of equipment.

I sincerely apologize if I implied something incorrectly. This whole thread has been a lost cause on so many levels.
And shown by so many also.

I honestly think the bulk of its posters meant the best in their own ways. I suspect this became more a theater of the
many minds of AK and how they all differ. As me and GChief both like, Subjectivity! :)

Who would have guessed, a load of eccentrics clashed. Never saw it coming ;)

But I really am sorry if I maligned a point of yours.

Much of this thread has left me openly baffled.

All the best to all involved. Clipping is bad, overpowering drivers is bad, operator error is bad, drivers failing in whatever mode is bad, not fully understanding ones gear its limitations and rated handling is bad, starting a discussion on all this can end bad....

But afterwards life goes on and so does the sweet music that keeps us interested in all this :)

With many good lower power amps, why scare people off with "clipping kills tweeters/big power makes everything better" when it is not true.

Maybe you and I can agree to disagree on the clipping thing. And thats cool. I swear on my kids life I had no idea that clipping being capable of killing drivers was up for debate.
Im not saying this to start an argument really. I honestly had no idea on this one. Again I claim to be an audio expert as much as I claim to be an NFL expert player.
But this one is new to me.

And as the owner of many single ended tube amps Ive nothing against low power amps. Really. Id love to be the proud owner of some Pass Class A amps.
I own a Threshold amp and love it.

So really Ive nothing against lower watt amps at all. Im against drivers being blown. Nothing more. And much like a human death. How it happens is inconsequential, its just bad.

To much power can blow a driver is the main point.
To Small of a Amp
You drivers can get to much power when the amp clips and starts to fail, sending a blast of power to the drivers. This is can happen without warning in a nano second, and generally takes out HF tweeters.

To Big of a Amp
You drivers can get to much power when the amp is turned up to high and they will blow if you do this. However, unlike clipping a amp to failure, you drive your speakers into distortion and you can hear that, you have plenty of time to turn down the volume.

In both cases the drivers blow with to much power, I opt to use a larger amp than needed. This give me the opportunity run my speakers to their limit, and have the warning they are at that limit. Amp failure and running it to it's limits gives you no warning and is why most drivers get blown this way.
