I have a University 312 speaker that needs a new potentiometer...

Hello...I have a University 312 3-way speaker that has a potentiometer attached but the housing for the potentiometer disintegrated from age (the plastic dried out), It has 3 wires attached, which appears to be a 3 position variable switch perhaps? Can this be replaced with any variable adjustable potentiometer with 3 leads, or is there a specific function that needs to be addressed? Is it even necessary? Thanks in advance for any replies...

It is likely something called an L-pad. Look into that.
 
That Is just like a regular volume pot, except it most likely has a linear resistance whereas a volume pot has an "audio" taper.
The construction looks to be wire wound which us necessary in a hi wattage part like a losser pad. 10 or 15 watt part, now you just need to know the value...
 
Thank you for the responses and pointing me towards an L-pad, @biscuithead. The speaker says it’s 25 W, and it says 8 - 16 ohms. I was looking online and the closest I could find were 15 watt 8 ohm or 50 watt. I went with the 50watt, which was 16 ohm. The tech at the supply house I bought from said the 50w 16 ohm would probably be fine. I ordered it. Hopefully it won’t blow up the speaker or somehow blow the outputs on my amp which is what I’ve become quite good at in attempting to fix my own gear :)
Just curious @trainbuftony, aside from the wattage and ohms, is there another value I would need to consider? And am I off base to think that the higher wattage L-pad at 16 ohms is probably the better option as it would accommodate greater wattage than I need (as opposed to less with the 15watt one)? And same logic for the 16 ohms as well?
