I have no idea how this works

Hi guys, I'm a completely amateur vinyl listener.
My dad recently gave me an old turn table and I've been trying to get it going but am still scratching my head.

Its a "Technics Quartz Direct drive Turntable system, SL1200MK2"
I'm hooking it up to an "AKAI Stereo Integrated Amplifier model AM-A1"

All i can get out of it is a very very low volume with sony speakers from an old surround system.

Can anyone offer any guidance?

The pre amp is your akai amplifier in this situation, on the back you should see two RCA jacks labeled Phono make sure you're hooking the turntable up to these jacks and no others.
 
Right, do you have any idea what cartridge and stylus you have on it? If you connect a CD player, ipod, tuner etc. To it do they play at normal levels?
 
look on the back of the akai and plug the TT in the PHONO inputs. then select PHONO button to the right. see if that help with the sound.
 
tried an i pod and it sucked too super low levels
I'm getting the right plugs into the back... no idea what cartridge but i took the head to a local hifi store and got a whole new one.
 
GUYS i got it!! There is a red "tape" button on the system that was pressed... this cancelled the sound for some reason?
Anywas now the record is playing with a lot of static... any thoughts here?
