try working all the controls and switches a few times with vol turned low .

It's entirely possible the "static" is just dirt on the record, is it staticy with the ipod? is it when you lower or up the volume or twist the knobs?

Like what Petehall said, just twist the knobs back and fourth a few times and see if it helps.

Haha. Someone should make a "beginners guide to vinyl" thread and have a admin make it sticky, where users can list good starter table's, cart's and cleaning gear and how to handle records, and list answers to common problems like this as well as inner groove and outer groove distortion and how to align your cartridge and such. Help younger audiophiles get into vinyl.
