My trusty I phone 5S died and I have a new 8. The dac in my 5s sounded better than the new 8. The top and bottom end were much better on the 5 and sq was as good as my NAD CD player.

so now I want to use the ( I am told)good Burr Brown dac into my AVR.

I know you can get an HDMI cable but I thought the digital coax input. ( the one that looks like an rca jack orange on left of rear.) was supposed to be better. But I don’t see a conversion cable for that.

Looking for suggestions for my best direct digital, input method. Please use basic terms this is new to me. Thanks

I’d use the CDP inputs if your not running a CD player.

question: why are you using a 3.5mm to RCA 2?

Why not invest in a BLT2 and run high quality Bluetooth.

Your receiver has an optical input, the BLT2 has an optical output. A single cable would do the trick.

The xDuoo Bluetooth receiver is one to look out for too.

BLT2 & the xDuoo BT receiver will sound better than an AUX cable. Both run about $50 bucks.

That’s what I would do.

For $20 bucks you can get the Logitech Bluetooth receiver. For phone use that would best a wired aux cable... they just do.

Because the dac in my old phone running headphone out sounded just as good as my CD player so I had no issue with running my phone into an aux input on the receiver. Its not the case now and want to try the DAC in my receiver. I sit near my receiver so a cord isn't a problem.

well let me ask you this, how do you plan on turning off the DAC in your phone?

So you will be using the DAC on your phone, via the 3.5mm jack to an input on your receiver, isn't that running an analog signal to another DAC already?

I use a cheap (around $23) USB DAC, generic iPhone camera adapter, and a Lightning extension cable for my iDevices. The camera adapter has a USB port that allows it to connect to the DAC. The extension cable is so I don't have that mess of cables and adapters so close to my iPhone, as I find it annoying. The DAC then plugs into analog RCA jacks. I have another DAC that has USB inputs and optical, coaxial, and analog outputs. That would work if you really want to use the DAC in your receiver since it basically converts USB audio to optical / coaxial. All this is from Amazon, and I can give more details if needed.

I understand what you are saying but I dont want to go digital out from my phone to a cheap dac to the good dac in my receiver. I dont see the point to that as I am adding another unknown.

your best option for a digital input from your phone would be to stream via Bluetooth, to a good 4.2 or even a 5.0 aptX Bluetooth receiver.

using the Optical out put off the BTR to the back of your receiver will give you the best quality your phone can output.

Optical is not ran via contact connection, but via a light source. Its really amazing for audio.

This seems like a messy solution; if its simply a matter of wanting a front connection at the receiver it makes more sense to get the Apple HDMI adapter and a short extension so you don't have to reach around every time.

Messy? LOL It's the only way to do it, when the device doesn't have a USB DAC input and one doesn't want to use BT (OP said he wanted a good DAC, I'd think BT wouldn't meet that) and doesn't want to buy an AppleTV or Airport Express. By the way, the HDMI to Lightning adapter is the same size as the camera adapter and really isn't a neater installation. I've done it both ways.

I guess what I am wondering is if I go out usb from phone to a some brand of external box and from that output either digital coax out or optical. to my receiver will that device affect anything or will it act as mostly a pass thru device. I want to know what My internal dac is capable of not the device what's in front of it.

It's not going to get you an input into your receiver's DAC, unfortunately. HDMI is the only way to do that.

One possible alternative would be to get a Chromecast Audio, which is discontinued but can probably be found used fairly cheaply. This might give better quality than Bluetooth.

hmm, since the iPhone apparently has USB host capability, you could try one of the inexpensive USB DACs that also have an optical output. I use one of those to send audio to an AVR from my desktop PC. Compatibility could be an issue, though.
