I think I'm addicted...

When I first joined here I was simply looking for info on a Pioneer amp I was going to buy to replace a TOL Harman Kardon AVR receiver I was selling... however since hanging around here I've accumulated the following;

- Sansui A-M7 Amplifier
- Sansui T-M7 Tuner (matched pair)
- Pioneer SA-506 Amplifier
- Pioneer TX-606 Tuner
- Pioneer CT-506 Cassette Deck
- JVC A-S5 Amplifier
- JVC SEA-70 Graphic Equiliser
- JVC R-S11 Receiver
- JVC KD-10 Cassette Deck
- Technics RS-TR165 Double AR Cassette Deck
- Pioneer SCS-13 Speakers
- Chou Denki ST230 Direct Drive Turntable
- Chou Denki 8003 Direct Drive Turntable
- Teac BX-300 Amplifier
- Rambler RT333 Tuner

And I've gone from thinking people who went out of their way to buy vinyl were crazy elitists thinking it made little to no difference to having a record collection topping 300 slabs of vinyl... then there's the accumulation of cassettes...

The craziest thing is I don't use the pioneer much as all it's lights & dials (dual VU meters on all three) are in working condition and I don't wanna blow a globe while I'm listening to the radio doing the washing up, so I mostly use the Teac BX-300 (the JVC A-S5 needs repair and the JVC R-S11 has a scratchy volume slider)

I think the wife is going to murder me in my sleep !

This hobby can certainly turn into an obsession, can't it? I think everyone eventually comes to that realization when they either run out of space, run out of mad money, or run out of WAF [ but some of us still keep on keepin' on - call it denial, I suppose]. :D

The good news is, there's always hope! I've pared down my collection by 50% over the past year and my goal for the next 12 months is to cut my current gear down by half and just focus on my LP endeavors which, in itself, is slowing down considerably as well.

I'll still take home certain audio gear orphans if they come across my path just as long as I have room for them to work on and then eventually pass the items on to someone who'll use it.

My goal is to finalise two matching systems - one for upstairs, one for downstairs, however at the moment everything is a bit of a hodge-podge - would ideally like to lay my hands on a high end pioneer unit with VU meters but am stuck down the low end of the market due to $ constrictions.

Sorta looking at a SX-6000 receiver at the moment, is $40 (~$35 US), but I think I might leave it and wait to see if I can find 'the piece'.

Oh, I also have an Amalgamated Wireless Australia QM-1 Quadramatrix Decoder ;) it's in use with the Teac BX-300 downstairs. Can be used to replicate stereo signals, or split off quad into 4 channels. Quite nifty - non powered unit too.

This hobby can definitely become addicting.

Years ago, I thought people who said their "hobby" was "audio" were ridiculous. Spend more money, get better sound. Spend less money, get worse sound. How can that be a hobby? Little did I realize! :D

Like many here (and as already mentioned in this thread) I went through a fill-up-all-the-storage-space, push the WAF limits phase, and am now trying to shrink the accumulation. More than trying, I'm doing it, but it takes time. Seems you can aquire gear faster than you can dispose of it (when you aren't just trashing it or giving it away, but trying to sell it or at least find it good homes).

Welcome to the addiction! :D I doubt it ever completely goes away (and almost hope it doesn't), but I do think it eventually re-balances and becomes more just one of life's pleasures, and less of an addiction/obsession.

I, too, hope to pare down to a limited number of systems/collections, much less than what I have now... but I'm still formulating what I most want some of the "final" collection to be/not be.

Welcome to the sickness. Close to two years here, but I've moved into perfecting the systems mode and away from the gather, hoard and clutter mode. It's been my experience that there are certain things you come across that make buying more things with the same function redundant. That said, I've still bought 3 receivers in two weeks...but only because they deserved rescuing from where they were. That's my story anyway.

Welcome to the addiction. I too have reached the "improve the system" stage of the hobby -- one item to go out for every item that comes in (Yeah, right. Like that's really going to happen.). But, it's the goal I tell my wife I'm trying to acheive. Most of us acknowledge that it is possible to have too many of something, be it amps, tuners, turntables or speakers, but we are guided by the principle that you can never know how much is enough, until you have too much.
Happy collecting and happy listening.
Bob

The guys (and girls?) here are horrible people. You come here looking for info an a piece of gear, and you see all the gear porn photos and hear how good this old gear is that can be had for pocket change. The next thing you know you have a pile of vintage gear and are a complete addict. You start with a low end vintage SS reciever and an old crappy cd player. The next thing you know it's tubes and turntables. Thanks a lot!!! ;)

"The first taste is free, kid. "

And that's the truth. I started with almost free gear that sounded good. Yesterday I spent decent cash to have midrange vandersteen drivers rebuilt to original spec and while I was there, bought a professional turntable wall-mount shelf for one of my five TTs. And that was just one day! And while I was looking at shelves, I was listening to the shops owner's (Van L Speakerworks) prototype for his newest and thoroughly AMAZING speaker that actually somehow seemed a bargain at around $3000. It's a slippery slope, but like skiing can be fun if you somehow manage to make a sport out of said slope.

much like the movie Ground Hog Day.....

threads of this manner appear quite frequently

welcome to the club.

Haven't gone down that slope yet, thank the Lord, but I been having visions....

I started with tubes and turntables. I am old enough to remember tubes (we used to have them in our TV and my grandmother had a tube console.) I still remember the repair man with his tube tester. However, I grew up on SS gear and one of my first (big ticket to me) purchases after college was my Denon System, which is an early 90's one. Neither of my parents were into high fi and the best we had growing up was a Centrex by Pioneer (I am sure it was their low-end line) receiver with the built in 8-track and two cheap speakers with only a full range driver in each.

One thing is for sure, the stuff piles up quick!

It's over for you. The addiction has already entered your bloodstream. Soon you'll be taking out a second mortgage on the house, selling unused organs, and donating plasma to fund other audio purchases..... :D

well, I hope not, just keep it "thrifty" and whatever you don't like sonically, just sell and get new stuff to try out. That's one of the best things about this hobby is trying all these vintage pieces at a fraction of the cost when new. Some you'll fall in love with and some you'll probably hate. As time goes on, you'll build up a good knowledge base of what sounds good to you and can help out other new people entering the hobby. have fun with it and enjoy the music. That's the most important thing.

OK, I guess it's time to come out of the cabinet. So I'm looking around the house and I have the HT, the 2 channel system, the bedroom system, the kitchen system and the garage system. Now I still have all these speakers, amps, rcvrs, & cables etc. scattered around the house not connected to anything. Of course I'm going to put them online to sell this weekend or was that last weekend or last month or last year??? Yep, I'm one too! There's no hope, I'm lost. Step 1 is as far as I'll ever get. Oops, gotta go check on that 8-track for the garage I saw on the bay. :D

I have two systems right now. One near the main television in our living room and one in my listening room/kid's playroom basement. You should have seen the look on my wife's face when I started talking about a possible quadraphonic system in the garage. Needless to say, I sold my quadraphonic receiver on e-bay. I still need to get rid of the speakers though.

Realistically, the Pioneer 500/600 series set is the only real keeper of the bunch plus the JVC cassette deck.

I bought the JVC A-S5 to be a keeper but it's stuffed (rear RCA ports have the R channel blown) and the EQ doesn't function - sliders do nothing. So I'll probably throw them away on fleabay for 99 cents or what not.

The Teax BX-300 whilst having MM/MC Phono and being all solid aluminium and well built doesn't really float my boat - it's also 40cm wide which doesn't fit all my 42cm wide gear very well.

What I really want to find is a nice flouroscan pioneer amp with VU bars, or a nice Pioneer/JVC receiver with VU meters (notice a theme?) there was a Sansui Amp/Tuner set on the local classifieds recently that was tempting, but alas it was black faced alum, rather than my addictions favourite colour silver.

I'm so envious of those of you in the USA it's like a candy store when I open ebay USA audio section whereas over here in AUS we have mostly low end, broken, poor condition junk available :\
