Am I missing something why in the world would that be thought to be worth 50k$? I mean it looks neat, but I have to missing something, can someone explain?

It's not worth $50k. The seller is fishing for an offer so he does not have to pay ebay fees.

It is worth a small fortune though.:thmbsp:

Does the name Western Electric ring any bells?

When it comes to audio and audio collecting, WE is the absolute gold standard. Few if any products from ANY other electrical/audio manufacturer come close collectibility wise. And the ones that do come close like Altec, AR had their roots in Western Electric or have a tangential WE connection.

Right. It's about collectibilty more than listenability in this case. Few made, few left, and fewer still in this kind of condition. Some people do buy to collect rather than strictly to listen. It's as legitimate as collecting sports cars to have and not to drive. May seem weird to some, but there it is.
 
Is it possible to remake this amplifier? The secret sauce in these old amps is the transformers. Does anyone have the chops of the old masters when it comes to winding transformers? Can this really compete with today's R core transformers? Uh oh, I just sounded pretentous...Seems if one could wind the transformers like the old days and pick top components, this sound could be had for way less.

And with WE gear their also comes the exclusivity factor.
As the vast majority of the things WE manufactured were never made available to the general public. As WE made few if any 'consumer products', and the products that the public may have come in contact with was merely rented for use, or at best leased.
WE retained ownership rights to most everything they ever manufactured.

The history of WE is absolutely fascinating!
Since WE were a monopoly with only one customer. Everything WE did was made to incredibly high, cost no object, standards. Everything WE made was made to be 'bullet-proof', and to last, for just about eternity.
That's why WE gear has the cache that it has today. It was as high end as the technology would allow with vast, incredible R&D $$$ behind everything they ever did/made.
 
Saw the WE horn drivers going for crazy money too.Over $8000 for (1),and 16K for another pair.I would probably have a heart attack if i stumbled across some.
