Wow. Ca. 1925. Found this info on the Antique Radios site...
"Its original use was to drive a Western Electric cone speaker, from the output of an ordinary radio."
"These were also used in theaters as headphone amplifiers for the hearing impared for many years. They were designed to use a WE type 217A rectifier tube and a WE type 205D output tube. Most often they are found with a pair of type 205D tubes because a half dead 205D tube worked well as a rectifier, was always handy (not any more!), and cost much less than a replacement type 217A tube. "
