12 Western Electric transformers!!!

Anything "Western Electric" is one of the holy grails of old electronic stuff. Tubes, transformers, amps, anything.

I've seen Western Electric solder sell for $100 a roll.

Which is why I can't believe that the guy who was bidding against me for anything Altec at a recent old movie theatre liquidation auction completely ignored the WE 713C Mirrorphonic control panel. It was one of the very few things I actually got at that auction.

I need to get it degreased and post some better pics. Right now it's sitting in my spare bathtub because it's an oily mess. Check out the gigantic drum pots!

Something I wish I could have bought was a Western Electric sewing machine that popped up at a local flea market several years ago. Too much money for me at the time, though.

There is a healthy interest in Western Electric stuff here in Hong Kong, as well as neighboring parts of the Far East. It has a reputation and a cachet that in some cases may be deserved, because WE made some outstanding stuff, but in some cases may exceed what a more objective view would suggest as appropriate. I think some audio enthusiasts with deep pockets buy it based on the name, just to be able to say that they own WE. Very limited supply with strong demand has pushed the prices of WE stuff into the "silly" range.

I wish I had a time machine, and could jump back to the sixties and seventies, when a lot of WE stuff was being stripped out of old theaters and thrown away, and it could have been stockpiled for relative peanuts... sigh...

The line between audiophile and audiophool was passed over $10,000 ago.

A modern mixing console would eat this alive.

There are two significant problems with your statement.

First, just because somebody has the financial stability to be able to buy what he wants doesn't make him a fool.

Second, that item is not being sold as a mixing console, so whether or not it successfully competes with other mixing consoles is irrelevant to the outcome of the auction.

Well, it was a fun but short watch. Hope the guy is a paying bidder. I wonder if it's going over the those Chinese guys I saw posted awhile back. :D

I guess if I had the disposable monies, I would be bidding on some of that stuff.
