I went to pick up a speaker and an amp. Look what I got!

On Wednesday night, I saw an ad in Facebook Marketplace for an interesting looking amp with meters. The guy used it for DJing along with a set of likely DIY speakers. I contacted him and he replied, and then, nothing. Finally, I tried again last night. I could come in the morning. Just before I called it a night, he replied with 9 AM and his address and phone number.

I got up this morning at 8, snuck out of the house while my wife was sleeping, and drove 30 minutes to get the amp and speaker. Got there, and he showed me the speakers. Yes, speakers! They look the size of Cornwalls. I got them in my Tuscon, added the amp, and paid the seller his money.

Now I have to figure out what to tell my wife! They are still in the car.

They are well built and rugged. Definitely working speakers.

Any opinions on the speakers? Any idea what I could get for them?

Is it a single cabinet, or a pair of Pro speakers?
Are you in a band or do you do Pro audio work?

Hope there's room in the Garage.
For you and the speakers
EV's don't seem to have the same higher Resale as vintage Altecs, and some others. tweeters look like EV st350's can't tell what version.
seems there' no midrange speakers? The Amp does have a dedicated fan base, never saw a gold face Phase amp.
how do they sound as is?

I wish I had a garage. I would likely end up there. I'm hoping that someone I know might want the speakers. If not, I will have to make room in the shed.

I haven't taken anything out of the car, so I haven't heard the amp yet. It will be less dangerous if the speakers are gone. I only really wanted the amp anyway. I thought the price was good, but I wasn't expecting two speaker cabinets. I'll see what I can find out about the drivers.

You might have more luck parting out the drivers and tossing the cabs. I hate to advocate butchering speakers but these aren't clean examples of finely built speakers from JBL, AR, Klipsch, etc. I bet those full rangers (possibly EV Wolverine's) would find a home in a custom project cab and somebody is always looking for EV tweeters (i'm one of them)

What are your plans for the PL 400? I have the 700 with the White Oak kits waiting to be installed. Once finished it should provide enough power to run my Interface D's

I'm not sure what I will do with the PL400. I would like to set it up beside my Bose 1801, and see how they compare. I will likely consider parting out the speakers if I am unsuccessful in getting them out of the car this afternoon. I agree. The cabinets are nothing special. I guess first, I need to know better what I have, and that means opening the cabinets up.

The better St350a's Like used in the interface D's are the better ones. Pretty good too,
I have 2 pair, You have to remove the woofers and see what models. Never know they could be the good Big Alnico SP15's

I bet that you could easily cover the cost of purchase and parts kits to hot rod that amp by parting those big cabs out. It makes shipping easier and cheaper

I am likely going to part them out. My first option didn't pan out, and it is becoming more likely my wife will see them. They are still in the car. Later on this afternoon or tomorrow, I'll pull out the speaker cabinets and remove the good parts. I'll probably put the cabinets out on the curb. I was trying to tempt a musician friend of mine a few minutes ago, but he didn't bite. I'm very curious to see whats inside. I'll have better pictures then. The ones I have supplied were from the seller.

Not in a band Heather. Just an appreciator of live music. I bought the system for the PL400. I thought he only had one speaker, but he had two of them. I took it all anyway because I was having a temporary insanity moment at the time. And he is getting ready to move, so it was all or nothing.

It looks like I'll survive. I told my wife about them before we went out for supper. Then, upon returning, I removed the amplifier and brought it inside. Then I pulled out the cabinets and removed the drivers. They are in nice condition! Electro Voice EV SP15As and EV ST350As.

PU a pair of "VMR". Vended Mid Range drivers, find a schematic for the Interface D's X-overs, and copy them.

you can have a decent pair of speakers. although Refinishing those ugly cabs will be a challenge
or plan A, sell the EV's and fix the Amp.

I'll go with Plan A. I have enough great sounding large speakers and really don't want or need any more. If I had a workshop, I would love to build a nice set of cabinets for the drivers I've picked up over the years. But without a workshop, it ain't going to happen. I have a feeling I'll be retired before I get a workshop, but it is on the wish list.

I took a look at the Interface D's and those are nice looking speakers! But without a workshop, that is not in the realm of achievable. Not without calling in a favour or two, anyway.

BTW the D's use a 12" woofer. so you wouldn't have to copy it for your 15". Just instal the mids and refinish the cabs.
