Well, this is a bummer...
After applying a couple more coats of DOT3 to the surrounds, the Lansaloy was very soft and flexible, and had taken on all the qualities one would expect of foam. I figured that applying any more DOT3 would only lead to diminishing returns and reinstalled the drivers in their cabinets.
For amplification, I decided to use my (previously) reliable Sansui AU-517, with my matching TU-517 tuner as a source. Listening to the radio at moderate volume, I was quite pleased with the results of the DOT3 treatment; bass was significantly deeper while still remaining well-controlled. Really, I was quite surprised how good everything sounded.
And then out of nowhere the AU-517 decides to make a loud pop and release a torrent of white noise into the right channel! The speaker cone was traveling in and out wildly. I leapt to my feet and turned off the amp. After a few minutes of colorful language, I surveyed the drivers for damage. In total, the speaker saw about 2 seconds of full-volume noise, but that was enough to tear the Lansaloy surround a few places. Luckily, both drivers still work and I'm getting good continuity readings with my multimeter, and the woofer still travels in an out without the VC rubbing against the magnet. So the choice has now been made for me: I'm going to have to buy new surrounds. As for the Sansui, I'll have to wait until I get the time to open her up and see what wrong.
