If I Can Do It - You Can Do It! Veneering A PL-530 TT

Lance, sorry we didn't get time to swing in today. Had to get back and pick the kid up from daycare. I would have liked to see where you are at with your project. The PL-530 turned out pretty nice.
You might not have found me here, my day was a crazy train. Next time. The PL-530 looks great!

Why not do the veneer finishing with the Watcol' Danish Oil Natural before putting on all the trim pieces and faceplate etc so as to have it finished underneath?

I had to assemble the faceplate in order to drill out the mounting screws on the top. There is one mount screw [ the center one ] that could be drilled from underneath. The outside corner screws do not go through the substrate completely, thus the reason for the assembly. With the faceplate centered and secured, I was able to locate and drill out the screw points on each corner. Plus it gave me a chance to see if anything needed to be modified or prepped further before laying down the finish. Good photo op too. :thmbsp:

...I was able to peel it off easily - almost like skinning a cat...

And you know this, how, exactly?:smoke::D

Beautiful work, I have a PL-550 that needs the same thing. Is it similar?

Thanks,
John.:music::D

Me, too! My 550 has the "peeling vinyl laminate disease."

Seriously, beautiful, beautiful work! You are very patient and careful. You've got me all motivated to get started on mine!:thmbsp::yes:

That looks Maaarhvelous. Hey, I have a Pl-530 that I could....Oh wait never mind. :D

I just stumbled upon a PL-510A. The good thing about this table is that there is veneer only on the sides. :scratch2:

Nice work!

that's secksay!

I would've not considered this on my own, but now I will!

Can you speak to the finish you used vs Tru-Oil?

Niiiicce! Can't stand that vinyl junk either. I'm sure whoever came up with that old saw about skinnin' cats never tried it!:D
an' I'm glad somebody else rose to that bait before me!
Really nice job!! Completely put that table in a different class.
Bob

I also have a new to me PL-530 with the vinyl peeling off. I recently picked up some cherry veneer from a local cabinet company. Excited to get started and am hoping for a similar results. Thanks for all the photos and detailed instructions.

I'm working on a veneer project and made a test box so I could learn a little about veneering before I started on my base. Raw veneer gives you lots of options and a better selection of materials. However, I'm beginning to believe that iron on or peel-n-stick would be much easier. 1/42" is PDT and curls like a banshee when you apply the glue.

Make sure that you make a trial run first.

New PL-570 Project

I'm about to start a veneer project on a newly acquired PL-570. I notice that the vinyl film is peeling easily off some of the surfaces leaving a smooth, almost glossy, pinkish brown finish. The film is a semi transparent material about the thickness of photography film. Looking at the pictures at the beginning of this thread, the old vinyl is substantial and the substrate looks like dense particleboard. So, am I correct in assuming that the Pioneer vinyl veneer is two-part: film-covring a heavier material, all of which covers a particleboard plinth?

Also, both lower front corners have minor damage -- bumped and rounded off. I'll probably have to add and sand out some material. Does Bondo sound like the right stuff or is there something better?

I'll post some pictures once I get into this a little deeper.

Thanks for digging this up!! I remember this when it first posted. We were just talking about this issue Saturday at the SMAC meet.

I've got a few PL-530s here and they ALL have fubared plinths, so this is exactly what I need to do; thanks again for the legwork!!

This was a really fun project that I did for AKer vdplag. I'll have to give it another go for my father-in-law's PL-530 I'm trying to complete once I collect the missing parts.

You did a great job on that 530. Congrats, Max. It's so good to see such units being given a much needed face lift and I really like the way yours turned out.

Wood filler is OK for filling in slight depressions or small cracks, but something harder is required for the corners or dings along the edges. Wood filler will get mangled the first time the corner gets banged, and all your work with the veneer can be 'ruint'.

MinWax makes a two-part filler and I believe that bondo makes something for wood working. Follow the instructions then smooth it to the required shape with sandpaper over a flat board (no rounded edges). Now your veneer job should really stand up to a few bumps.

Ghazzer,
Working with unbacked veneer IS a PITA. Much easier to work with the paper backed version. Takes glue and a hot iron well. Paper backed will attach to rounded corners too! Paper backed cherry on my DIY speakers. Still holding perfectly after almost 4 years. Guess it's gonna stay this way.

Maxz28,
Your work is professional quality. Very nice indeed. Congratulations on a job well done!

Ron
