If i only had a plinth

I am the proud owner of a Technics SL1210 MK-5 .My good friend and tech talked me into a turntable upgrade
using a 12 inch Ortofon tone arm . The SL1200 does not have the room on the plinth to mount it.
Another table was needed being a direct drive fan I purchased a SP10 mk2 from a respected fellow AKer
I contacted Acoustand Audio in the UK and ordered a custom plinth . I feel this upgrade should punch well
above the price point of this project . 235.JPG

I have 3 LOMC cartridge choices a Nagaoka Jeweltone JT3r ,Ortofon SL-15 & a Denon DL301 MK2
I have a Technics SH305MC SUT. all the cartridges are very different sounding .
 
I got a SP 10 MK II getting a plinth built for it also. Vintage Analog Restoration is doing it, also known as Flahser1 on AK. Its a variable density stack, using MDF in the core, sandwiched by two pieces of acrylic, then Baltic birch on the outer layer. It gets wrapped in a ribbon mahogany veneer and a high gloss clear finish. Hopefully I will have it here in a month or so.....

Be interested in hearing how the SP 10 compares to my Galibier Serac.

The plinth I am having made is a cast acrylic top layer and MDF about 4 inches thick with removable arm boards. I should have it in the middle of January . I purchased a DR Feickert protractor to set this table up

Sounds like its going to be sweet. As I understand it this one will be 5" thick, countersunk for the table, and Larry was able to mount aluminum plates to bolt the removable arm boards to. Friend of mine had the original version of the Feickert protractor, it worked nicely. Kind of a pain with all the variable settings, but you could do any arm with it.

Looking forward to seeing pics of it when done. There seem to be several really nice SP 10's on AK .

Sounds like a nice plinth.

Is the Ortofon in a SPU body, or standalone? That would be the one to try first in that 12" arm, I'd wager.

I finally got my Synergy SPU paired with the TT in my avatar, and it sounds very intriguing!

The SL-15 is a standalone I have played all of my cartridges on my SL1200 the Nagaoka is my favorite
it is a ribbon cartridge very rare . They all have a different flavor . I play the Denon the most that one I can replace
the other 2 are NOS low hours and cant be found so easy

also I'm considering a plinth for my Sp 10II just restored, but if I can not get his original base in obsidian (Sh10B3) I wanted to get a very heavy plinth.

You are able to know what weighs only plinth you bought from Acoustand?

Call Lee @ Acoustand Audio . My plinth was a custom Slimline 16 1/2 " x 24" and 2 extra layers of plywood and a arm board .
They are good people to deal with very happy with my purchase .
 
Well,
I bought only a couple of bulb lamp for the SP 10 at Acoustand, I also saw the plinths but from the photos appear very light in weight.

I its weight you want look into Oswald Mills slate plinths or cast one your self out of concrete .
I was thinking of adding weight to mine in the area under the table by putting a piece of marine shrink wrap around the table and making a bottom plate and filling it with sand or epoxy granite .

The plinth I have has a lot of area underneath the motor housing to add mass with out seeing it .
Here we go again another project .
