If I Told You What It Takes to Reach the Highest High...

Perhaps a shaved O-ring? O-rings are available in various materials/elastomers.. or far out of the bax a textured condom over the whole bullet?

Tried an O-ring because I thought is would present a smoother, more consistent surface over which the sound would pass. They are too "fussy" in their placement. The rubber band worked better and is much easier to "tune."

I think the plots speak volumes for themselves. But the ear is the final judge.

And I'm still waiting to see that filter that makes a 2402 flat between 10-20kHz. Can you build it for the cost of a rubber band?

'Nuff said.

I can certainly build it for substantially less than the cost of your requisite D16R2405 diaphragm PLUS a head of broccoli.

Less than the cost of the broccoli alone, perhaps, even, if it must be "Organic."

'Nuff said....

I was about to say that:

1) I didn't want to open my mint 075 drivers.
2) I didn't want to pay $200+ for a pair of 2405 JBL diaphragms.

A crossover would be cheaper.

As I said, I can also do it with the existing 2402s, but loose more volume. So it does come down to the cost of broccoli. I like mine with some butter and parmasian cheese on it.

BTW, I do take credit for more than the rubber band. I also take credit for the shim I designed that lets the 2405 diaphram safely be used with the 2402 phase plug.

For those who want to make this conversion, the shim is 20 thousands vinyl plastic with an OD of 1.2 inches and a 3/8" hole in the center.

As I said, there are a lot of people, including Orange County Speaker, who have tried unsuccessfully to put the 2405 diaphram in the 2402 chassis due to structural interference, regardless of what JBL says fits in what.

Actually, you don't need to open the driver. You can just slip the band on/off from the front.

And, while it may be possible to get a similar response with the 2402 diaphram and a crossover modification, you will loose way too much volume doing so unless you go with an active crossover.

Even then, you would be stressing the high end of the response through way too much boost in that region.

Have you shown the measured response of the stock 075/2402(H) with the band?

With no filter?

:dunno:

I haven't shown it here, but I do have it in the camera still, but not the best response I was able to achieve. Will remeasure when Grumpy comes by. And believe me, it looks pretty good, and if it wasn't for the difference in overall volume and minor differences in response, at $144 for each for three 2405 diaphrams, it makes for a difficult choice. (I only worked three days last month.)

Also, the banded 2402 diaphram does not help as much with some of the other frequencies in the crossover range (and lower) as the banded 2405 diaphram and the tuning seems more critical.

Here is the way I look at this whole thing. If you had some old JBLs with 075 tweeters and didn't want change the stock look, this looks like a very good option to pursue for the cost of eating brocolli. As Newman from Seinfeld would say "Vile weed!".

Grumpy came by today to listen to the banded 24025 and was mighty impressed! He said he has never heard a 2402 sound this good. :music: :thmbsp:

Compared to the 2405, it now comes down to a matter of personal preference and changes with the song or moment within the song. Each has it's stronger points.

Certainly the 24025 does not have the horizontal distribution of the 2405, but it is certainly no worse and maybe a little better than the 2402. But, the 2405 is actually more sensitive to up/down dispersion than the 24025.

We took a bunch of plots and I still have to scan them.

Todd, JBL's are appreciated on this forum, but so are lesser brands. One which has proved to be well accepted is the EconoWave.

If you could teach us how to band a Selenium D210Ti to flatten it's response, you may be elected king here at AK. :king:

No doubt some company exec is reading along and will soon be marketing rubber bands made of "audiophile grade rubber" extruded to give a consistent thickness around the entire circumference to within 0.5 microns. Only $200 per band!

Does Grumpy have and AK ID?

AK's Grumpy is someone else....

I hope those plots document this contention, because 2405 has substantially wider vertical beamwidth than the stock 2402:
