Ikea Expedit - UNAVAILABLE

I had to carry 5 of them up to a 4th floor apartment with no elevator. My back still hurts. Those things need to be in two smaller boxes instead of one that weighs as much as a small Buick.
 
Double 4X4 in walnut. These do come in two boxes.

I got mine Saturday, and put it together Sunday. Now I've got more room for more LPs.

If you get the expedit, i would recommend getting something to put in the back of each cell to keep your records from going all the way back. I went to the Home Depot and just got some 90 degree molding and some screws. Just cut the material down to fit in each cell and then put it back far enough and then just screw it in. Makes things a lot better :).
 
Have you done a CL search for Expidit? I got both of mine (4x4 adn 5x5), in the almost black/Brown, and have a grand total of $20 (Pluse gas..) in both. These are popular with college kids, and they often sell/give them away when it's time to move on. Other people that are "mobile" do also.

EDIT: 26 listing in my area...
 
For solid backing material on the cheap, get door skins from a lumber and hardware supply. They are about 3/32" thick, are real 3-ply veneer and stain nicely. I used 2 of them on my 5x5 Expedit and they worked out great.

That's the one I go to. They always seem to have stock on the dark ones. I bought three of them there...
 
It's not unusual for items to be out of stock as they change suppliers. Many of their staple product are made by multiple factories.
 
Man, I live three hours from an Ikea and need a Expidit bad! In the mean time I bought some 'milk crates' at Big Lots. Guess what, they are no longer big enough to hold LP's, 1/4" to small!!!:no: I think I'm going to build me a record store style rack that I can flip through the records, after all I'm divorced so I have one big man cave with no WAF!!
 
My wife and I enjoy playing "Spot the Expedit" on TV. They seem to show up as props on lots of shows.

I try to limit myself to one 4 x 4 Expedit worth of LPs... When it gets too full, that's when I cull through to remove the stuff I'm not really listening to. Right now, I have a few supplemental boxes of LPs sitting in the dining room, so my discipline isn't really working.

I just helped my next door neighbor set up a dark walnut 5 x 5 on Sunday so I know that size is also still available at the College Park, MD IKEA, FWIW.
 
I bought an Expedit on-line at Ikea.com in the last two weeks. Thought I ordered two, but only one was delivered. FYI, the shipping is ~$25 for a $39.99 item.

I was looking to buy one of the 4 by 4 units and the unit is $129 and the shipping is $199. :eek: I am probably going to get it from one of the dealers on eBay. The closest ikea is in Atlanta and I am not sure it would fit in my gf's Suburu even if I wanted to drive there to get it.

Guess you're going to Potomac Mills. I bet that's the closest...I used to live in Richmond and, though closer, it was still a trek to go up there every time I wanted some furniture to fill my college apartment.

Sorry, but neither the 4X4 of the 5X5 are under 5'

Each compartment is about 13” and the sides are around 2.

My 5x5 is a little over 6' assembled, and the top and bottom go the full width.

packed it will be some inches longer that 6' the 4x4 will still be over 5" packed,

They are indeed heavy.

A caution on assembling: be sure the middle shelves go horizontally, not vertically. they are the strongest horizontally. if you go with the long boards vertically, and use the support dividers as shelves all the weight will be supported by 4 pins, and you risk the shelf breaking out through the pins with the heavy weight of records. I try to be sure my partial shelves are the end shelves. the bottom most shelf and the middle intermediate shelves will take about anything since the load is purely compression.

And again, for those having a hard time getting one; do a search on C-list for Expedit. There should be a lot available since they are so popular…

Assembled dimensions of the 4x4 = 58.6" on each side
Assembled dimensions of the 5x5 = 72.9" on each side

In either instance, they should fit in a Gran Cherokee with the back seat down although you may break your back getting them in and out.

+1 on the assembly advice. I glued my pegs, though I'm not sure it's necessary.
