I'm done with "fun but fake." Looking for suggestions.

I think it's the same inferiority complex that FORD drivers of the 1960's had. With maybe the exception of the 428 CJ nothing they offered could keep up with a like priced Chevy so they would stand around badmouthing the Chevy.

Ha! Only a Harley could say something like that... :scratch2:

OK. I don't like JBL's or Harleys. That's not bad mouthing. That's a personal opinion.

Buying anything that doesn't work "right" and tweaking it to make it work right doesn't make sense to me. Tweaking something that works right to make it work better does make sense, at least to me.

The OP's comments about the sound of his JBL's are the same observations that cause me to reject them outright. Sure, they can be fixed. However, I'd rather purchase a speaker that had sound I liked and later improve that. The key factor here is, if I like the sound to start with.

With that said, I'd love to have a Buehl!

There is something I've noticed on this and some forums:

1. Harley riders seem to never jump in on a thread and tell riders of other makes that their bikes are ****.

2. JBL aficionados are much the same.

3. UJM riders just HAVE to tell all us Harley guys that out 30+ year old bikes with 100k or 200k miles are junk. Imagine that...my XLCH has 200,000 miles on it that I have put all but 8 of those but a UJM with 20k is a better bike.

4. Non JBL guys just have an uncontrollable urge to bad mouth them.

And don't even bring up a CPBRA...THAT was a Shelby creation and if the truth were known....which it is but never admitted to....Shelby first approached GM to use a SBC in the AC Bristol Ace. They declined.

Well said
Very well indeed

I'm aware these aberrations can be corrected.

In large part with a set of good stands at least 24"s off the floor, good placement and a good source

That's not too much to ask

And now these Zilch plugs hold forth even more promise..................

Not all JBL's are created equal, so it's a shame to write off all JBL's because of one particular branch of the tree. The speakers that turned you off to the brand were created to fill a specific niche in order for JBL to break into an existing market.

Before the effective destruction of the JBL Legacy this year by Harman (all manufacturing and engineering going offshore) JBL had the best design facilities in the world in Northridge, CA. I think you would be impressed if you ever heard XPL's, Performance Series, 250 TI's, or Project Arrays (not to mention large format speakers like 4430's or 4344's and 4345's).

I wonder how many of the bashers here ever went to a concert where Claire Brothers Audio was the sound reenforcement company (The Who, Springsteen, U-2 and a huge list of others). How about the NASA theater room at the S[ace Centers at Huntsville and the Cape. All JBL. Maybe the Speedway. All JBL. When I toured the speedway all those horns were powered by 1 (ONE) Crown MACRO-TECH 10,000.

You mean that Chevy has ruled the street ever since 1956 when the 283 Power-Pack was introduced? Here's a fact you can chew on for a while..a STREET 427 L-88 made 505 rear wheel h-p and 585 at the crank in 1967 with a single 850DP Holley. A full-on Holman-Moody NASCAR 427 Ford made 550 at the crank with the Holley 1050 Dominator. Car to take about the 454 LS-6? The Deuce can tell you first hand about those engines on the street seeing as he had more than one.
And you could actually GET a 427 Chevy for about $400.00 on the option list. Exactly how many real 427 Fords did you ever see that weren't factory backed? Truth is most '427' COBRAS were really 428, 2x4, 355 hp Galaxy P.I. engines. There was never a factory 427 Mustang. I never saw a street 427 Fairlane. EVER. :D

Here I thought this thread was about something besides whining...

The OP is asking for ideas, not bashing of any speakers. He mentioned what he liked or not about his particular JBLs and you guys are going nuts over whether they're great or not. It doesn't matter so quit yer whining.

BTW, I'd entertain the Ohms as well if it were me. You might like them, you might not but they are pretty nice sounding to me.

Then Mopar's 426 squished them all.....

Nope.

I've heard most of them.

I've been an ESL user since 1983. There's not much in a box made by anyone that interests me.

Please note, I haven't commented about any JBL's but the L100 and 4312.

Keep your eye peeled; 1K buys a lot on the used circuit!

Not done with fun.

DQ-20, VMPS, larger Vandies, IMF, bigger KEF reference series. Who knows what you'll like a year from now.

Twisting facts like every Chevy guy does. That's ok. When you come to Austin, we'll talk it over a few beers, some real BBQ, and a laptop.

Does size matter.

Personally I think speakers are kinda like clothes, shoes, you have to try them on for size.Your approach is right. But you should listen to as many as you can to find the right ones for you.I like Altecs they have the clarity I'm looking for, in the room live performance like. The model 19 is quite large but sounds fantastic after crossover rebuilds.:yes:I agree with your assessment of JBL's they tend to be "JustBig & Loud" I had a pair of Hersey II's and I thought they were a little bass shy so you may like them. You may want to try a Altec Duplex too, a 604-8G would fit your requirements and budget.Too many to list, speakers are a little trial and error so to speak. Good Luck with your search. :music: Kind Regards !!!

I'm not done with fun. Yesterday got a set of La Scalas.

Not gonna replace my Bozaks or Hales but I've never taken apart a set of those til today; I didn't know the 'doghouse' was sealed in there. So it has more in common with my old set of KEF 103/4's than I could have imagined...

There were 2 small rocks in the back. When you played them loud, the rattling around made me think the woofer was toast! It plays just fine now that it no longer has rocks in its head.

Well one tweeter seems non-functional...guess I'll track that down.
