I'm thinking This...

Hi all,

I am also considering purchasing an integrated amplifier as I start to focus more towards stereo sound rather than surround. I currently have an Onkyo 805 receiver and as many of you all know, it has a very beefy amplifier section and has a max distortion of 0.05%. I am using it to drive some modified JBL 310 Northridge series speakers that to date still sound wonderful. My question is that if I were to add an integrated amp to drive my front speakers, would I get better quality sound than my current Onkyo 805 receiver? I really don't have a need for dac's or phono stages in the integrated amp because I already have some good equipment for those (oppo bdp-95, jolida jd9 upgraded).

The question is would I benefit from a $1200-$1500 purchase of a nice integrated amp? I know that my speakers are probably the weakest link, but after changing the crossover caps to audiophile grade resulted in a huge sound improvement on my JBLs.

I have also thought about upgrading caps in my 805 (i'm an engineer/tech and would be easy for me to do so) to improve on it? Any of your thoughts are welcome.

I completely understand what you're getting at and I will admit there are one or two other ints that have pulled my gaze from the Onk *cough* Anthem 225 *cough*. Though the issue becomes finding a place that either carries both amps I'm looking at or finding two stores close enough that I can demo them with in the same day. Though in all honestly it will probably be a bit till I pull the funds together (still paying my TV off) and the little fact that Onkyo hasn't officially released it state side yet.

It is pretty as well and it does have a few more WPC but that doesn't mean better amp though.

That Onkyo is a beautiful amp but I see you are running AR9's which from what I have read LOVE a bit of power. I think the Anthem would make them sing if you're planning on keeping them. Plus, DAC technology is moving so fast and the price is getting very reasonable for a great sound DAC, you can likely add a DAC if you find you want/need one.
