Need some work but totally fixable!!! I'd say maybe not a steal, but a deal!!! Anyone in Maryland interested in these? And of course, no affiliation!!!

For posterity....

Yeah, I saw those too. Good price, I agree. I'd bet it's either the pot needs cleaning or a crossover cap is flaky. Should be an easy fix.

Stands there, good cosmetics. Someone should score these.

Very good speakers, and likely a simple fix. These are the Improved models, which have had a kit installed and are not factory improved's.

Well worth picking up and worth FAR more than the asking price in sonic ability. I paid double for mine (granted, they came with original packaging, in near mint condition, owners manual, original owner and a spare B139) but I would happily pay up to $2000 for a pair (if I were planning to keep them forever that is). They sound that good. They need a larger room to sound best because you want to give them about 8-11 feet between the speakers and you want to sit at least the same amount or a bit further distance away for optimal integration of the drivers.

i've had that on my watch list
can't afford them but fun to watch
anywho, the price has dropped to $600

Wow, $600? Seriously good deal, they look to be in great condition.

Besides the fact they're big and heavy, it'd be a great pick-up for someone. These guys are pretty rare too. At that price, it'd almost be worth looking into freight.

could also be a partially shorted inductor -- they are a relatively fine gauge.

:lurk: UShip shipping may cost around $300-350 for a 1500 mile trip for two speakers this size. Ask me how I know :D

It would road be a little road trip for me. But I don't have the funds or room right now. :tears:

Overall, no, in relative terms. The RSPM IV was the higher model. But in absolute terms, is the TLS 80-II worth $600, I'd say yes.

Thanks Cap, always hate to start completely new threads when something similar is afoot. but also don't want to highjack.

I really do hope someone here snaps these up, having personal experience with these I can tell you they are special speakers. Uncolored, highly neutral, amazing bass performance, believable imaging, wonderful dynamics.. they're fantastic. IMO, one of the best bargains in vintage audio these days.

OK. What can I expext from these if I snatch them up?

In terms of?

Sonics? Performance? Restoration costs? Resale value? :D

These were a $2500-$3000 speaker when new in 1978. Putting that in today's dollars brings it to around the $9000 mark. You can expect it to perform with the likes of modern speakers in this price range (although I do admit, modern speakers have superior treble response and detail resolve in general). They have a "rightness" to the sound that is a challenge to find in any speaker. They are highly involving and compelling, sounding natural yet exciting and dramatic when called for. Plus you can't beat that open sounding transmission line bass. I still have yet to hear a better bass from a speaker or subwoofer alike.

Plus these are classics and are a joy to own and gaze upon. Not to mention fairly uncommon!

Thanks. I guess I'm thinking restoration cost.
