Many years ago it was too easy for a lot of people to get use to lazily calling the Kappa series something other than what they're actually named. All anyone has to do is look at the terminal plates on the backs of any of the original Kappa speakers to see what they're named. The correct labels have always been used on the speakers, packaging, and company print literature.

It may have started as salesmen saying "the Kappas" then tagging the model number behind "Kappa" in the showrooms in the late 1980s and customers walking out with the wrong impression. I spent a lot of time in a local showroom listening and admiring the Kappa line and I don't remember the salesmen calling them anything.

Whatever. I've always put the number before Kappa and common use of the wrong way has always been a peeve. At least most people know what's meant either way around.

:dunno:

Well, the 7 Kappa's I bought have two adjustable feet on the front bottom (I am assuming to be able to lean the speaker back) I messaged someone locally that has a pair of Kappa 7's for sale and he said his do not have feet on the bottom. Were the 7 Kappa's the first generation made ?

The naming of the original Kappa series was inconsistent with the naming of all other Infinity models, including the Kappa x.1 series. For example, the Quantum series was always Quantum 3, Quantum 4, etc. Same with RS, Reference, Monitor, etc. Obviously they thought better of it with the later Kappas. So I have no problem calling the original models Kappa X.

I'm not certain about the feet but I will presume it's likely someone added them because the 7 are big enough to use as floor speakers that will benefit from tilting back. Probably could use elevation. The 6 don't have them and need elevation from the floor. Like sitting waist level on a wide bedroom dresser which is perfectly suited to the 6. I haven't seen the 7 since the showroom.

The Kappa series you and I have were the first generation for two or three years starting in 1988 and part of the Arnie Nudell era which is important to aficionados who desire the purism of having Arnie on the Infinity team back to their beginning. The point series (in swechsler's second image) was a little later. That does not mean post Nudell Infinity was inferior for certain models but it was certainly the beginning of a downward spiral for the brand handled by Harman Kardon. In an evolving environment that quickly outmoded cool standalone stereo stores in favor of mass consumer stores with home stereo departments like Circuit City and Best Buy in the 1990s.

The original Kappas were sealed enclosures. The Kappa.1+ series are ported. That fact proves the Nudell influence (or lack thereof).

Found these for sale and was puzzled by the midrange which is recognizable (to me) from other models but I have not seen it on a Kappa 7 (or is it 7s?) . The man told me he bought them 36 years ago - so 1988 - from a store in Illinois right after the model came out. They are in Chicago area if anyone over there is interested - he would not like to ship them as they are heavy and I am far away, so someone else can get them - they are offered for $300.
I wonder for how long were they built with these midranges and would that be a good one to install instead of the other kind used in the rest of the Kappas.
Anyone have any experience with this particular mod?

Looks like someone installed a midrange from a different Infinity model, probably when the original Polydome went bad. I can't be too judgmental, as I did the same thing myself a few years ago.

The later version (Kappa 7 Series II) had black plastic/polymer and graphite woofers, the white polydome mid-range, and round EMIT tweeters, were ported, and the cabinets are trapezoidal looking down from the top.

They sounded pretty darn good, BTW.

Had those, RS-IIIa, and RS-II at the same time. The wiring and crossover components in the Kappa 7 Series II were much better than the older Infinity speakers.

What is really interesting if this was made like this originally. The seller of this particular pair said, even before I got to ask, that he bought the pair like this new from the store!

He's wrong or misremembering. They were never sold with the older dome midrange. The fact that the styling between the mids and the tweeters is so different should make it obvious.

ETA: the earlier polydome is probably not a good replacement for the later models, as it doesn't go low enough. You might be able to make it up with EQ, but this has been discussed several times here already, and always rejected.

Well, at least that is what he told me. Here is the post, still up for sale in Chicago area.

That is cool! what are the serial numbers?

(edit to add, I see you didn't buy them, so don't have access to the rears)

Yeah, I'm far away so I don't stand a chance but the owner was helpful and responsive and volunteered info even before I asked. If you ask him, he will probably dig deep for more info.

Those are the original drivers, all of them. The polydome k midranges all turned yellow and brittle after age but as you can see stenciled at the bottom, "polydome k and the tweeter says, "Emit k". As far as I know those drivers were strictly Kappa drivers, not Kappa 7.1. They were only used in Kappa 7 through 9. The woofers are the original 12" IMG woofers which were not up to par with the Watkins dual voice coils. The midranges and tweeters can be repaired still today, and I can tell you for a fact they are stellar midranges as are the tweeters. I have replaced the crossover components with better modern equivalents. The IMG woofers were a weak link in the Kappas so I am replacing the IMG woofers in mine with high fidelity Dayton Audio RSS315HF 12" drivers that can go down to 23hz and can handle 400 watts. This was on the advice from Paul McGowan who worked and partnered with Arnie Nudell and he had the IRS V system and the same Dayton Audio drivers are what he used to upgrade the IRS V. I'm pretty sure Paul has the right idea as he's done quite well with PS Audio. I think they will last my daughter the rest of her life when I'm gone. In today's money the Kappa 7's would cost over $2000.00 each and they are as much as I could ever need in my small living room. They can definitely shake the house. As an aside, I have never seen a set of Kappa 7s, 8s or 9s that came with tilting stands, and I have seen many of them. There are none in Infinity ads or manuals that show tilting stands on any of that series that I am aware of, but I will eventually put risers on mine which will bring the midranges more in line with my ears from my particular seated position and will isolate them from the floor.

Hello Dan. You can get a surround kit for the woofers on ebay from Simply Speakers. You can also get Infinity dust covers from them.
