Infinity kappa 9 Help and some questions!

I just love the support the members here are able to and willing to provide, to help another member out

Really, thanks everyone

While im at it with questions about the kappa 9`s, can anyone provide any information about the correct type of
internal wires used, prefereably link to the specific, correct, and hopefully identical wire? I recently bought a bunch
of internal wire that had the correct specs written in the description, but it contained to few and to thick leading wires
when i got it,physically it looked more like a wire to be used as a ground wire...:dunno:

Well, it`s more correct of me to say, im gonna use these speakers for both music and home cinema, as i dont have space for 2 different audio setups. What do you think about the Onkyo processor combined with this system? ;) Also im curious to check out vinyl :music: Vinyl will be a whole new experience to me :)

The onkyo will be ok for surround but I wouldn't use it for two channel.

I use my epsilons for two channel only in the same room as my surround system but the surround system used different components and speakers.

I use iL 40's for fronts, iL 36 for the center and iL 10's for rears.

My epsilons are way to revealing for surround sound as were my kappa 9's that had even more detail in the semet tweeter, the iL speakers tweeters are naturally rolled off as compared to EMIT's, to me you can listen to the iL speakers in surround all day long and never get any listener fatigue, with the speakers with EMIT'S not so much as I don't think they were designed for home theater.

I have two EMIT-based home theaters set up (one in a dedicated theater, the other in the master bedroom) and I wouldn't agree about the fatigue experienced with EMITs. Now, to be fair, the only classic (i.e. rectangular) EMITs are in the Kappa 8s used as front left/right in the theater. Everything else, including centers, is EMIT-R. But Infinity did make at least four different EMIT-R based centers (Kappa Video, CS Video, Delta Center, Infinitesimal Center), so home theater was at least somewhat on their mind.

Okey, so prefereably a good stereo preamp for the kappa 9`s? Any suggestions for a good budget preamp combined with a krell ksa 300s? :)

So what you are saying is, the S-emits and emits are not very suitable for surround?

What is "iL"? :)

I like to see the different opinions from people, regarding usage of the speakers in different systems, all in all it will all depend on who`s ears are listening, yes?
As i mentioned earlier, i don`t have enough space for more systems\equipment, so i will just have to settle with what i have and just hope everything matches up for my personal listening :music:

About the potentiometer\L-pad cleaning mentioned earlier in the thread, i was curious, do i have to desolder the pots\L-pads or disconnect anything when applying deoxit and cleaning these? I can safely spray these without damaging anything like resistors\caps or risk shortening any circuits in any way?:dunno::)

No, do not remove anything. Deoxit is nonconductive and won't harm anything (remember, it's designed for electronics). If you're concerned, put some masking tape over the vents in the back of the pots, and spray through the space around the shaft on the other side. This will prevent any overspray from soaking into the stuffing or onto the speaker cones.

That's because the center speaker is where most of the dialog comes from, human voices, a rectangular emit in the center would give you listener fatigue much faster than say a soft dome tweeter.

I would wait for someone who owns a krell to reply and help you with choosing a good preamp to better match the sound of the krell amp to your k9's as for the IL they have a aluminum ceramic coated 1 inch dome tweeter that to my ears and compared to all the speakers that I own that have EMIT's in them they are rolled off and smooth sounding and designed for HT so you get less listener fatigue from watching hours of movies, I have epsilons and other speakers with EMIT'S in them and I would never use the speakers with EMIT's in them for HT unless you can match the electronics to curb the EMIT's

Congratulations on your 9s. I’m a big fan. My room is small so I don’t use extended mode and it has plenty of bass for me. Most people on the forum know I have a very basic set up on mine. Parasound small preamp and carver amp setup. I have no harshness in the tweeters. Also the adjustments for midrange and tweeters on the back move in very small increments. You will be able to tell the differences if you get the volume high enough. I agree with okeetee u should use the 9s as music and if u have to use smaller satellites even for surround would be much better, the smaller speakers next to the 9s are my surround setup. Also if you can post pictures when u can we like pictures. I’ve attached a sample video as well. Let us know what u come up with.

Im going to order some deoxit d5 then, and i will try to apply this directly to the pots\L-pads from the inside, and just cover up the crossover with something so the spray don`t dash all over it and it`s components :) I will come with an update as soon as this is done, but it will take some time, since i need to order this product from the states

I see your point :) As mentioned earlier i don`t have much space for extra equipment, but at least im gonna try the kappas for my HT setup, and if im lucky all the electronics will match up and also be able to curb the emit`s enough :) Though i don`t have all the electronics for my HT setup yet, im still searching and keeping a lookout for potential amps to use in my setup  Also my best friend are still restoring the kappa 9`s as we speak, can`t wait to make them sing correctly :music::angel: But i will keep you all posted, though it will take some time to get there ;)

Also, the Video/Center models came out after they had transitioned to EMIT-Rs on almost all models.
I was not aware of this, great to know, thank you for providing this info :) I really want to stick to the kappa classic series for my whole surround setup, if possible and if it sounds right :) Want all spekers to match in looks, if you know what i mean, just love the looks of these cabinets with the wooding and details

Thanks :) These speakers ain`t easy to get where i live. The pair i got was said to be in 100% perfect condition both in sound AND cosmetic`s. I was very excited, but they were a 8 hours drive from here and i had to get a friend to drive with me and provide his car (it was big enough for transporting the speakers), and i had to do some changes in my everyday life plans to make this pickup. Me and my friend both knew we had to drive 16 hours straight, since we had to get home to our family`s and continue our duties :) When we finally arrived at the speakers location, the speakers were nothing near the condition they were said to be, bass units had rifts all over the foam surrounding, the speakers full of dust (he didn`t even care to clean them before we arrived), they had been stored in a raw cellar, the cabinets where faded in color (especially the top plates), one of the S-emit`s where not functioning, and at least one of the woofers weren`t properly centered (he said these had been refoamed some years back), if thats the case, the job was very poorly done, not centered right, glue all over, didn`t look good at all, and last the crossover was scratching and not functioning properly :whip: But still, i couldn`t leave there without them, i had to buy them haha, so i took them, talked to a very good friend of mine and delivered them to him for restoration  So at the moment they are being restored :) I can probably provide pictures, but i dont know when i get to do this.

Thanks for sharing pics and video, great speakers :music:

The Kappa video has the same fluting as the Kappa 9, so they'll match, style-wise. I don't remember if you said what your room was like, but if you have the space, a single Kappa 6 might make a good center (it can be used horizontally if you rotate the tweeter). Kappa 5 would work as well, but they're relatively rare and usually overpriced when they come up for sale.

This is exactly what my brothers did, they bought a pair of 6's each took one, and they're the center channel for each of them matched to Kappa 9 and kappa 7.1 respectively.

I, back when I did surround, used a pair of speakers flanking the television right and left, since the majority of the sound will be coming from the center channel, I used the same speakers as my mains. IMO, Magnepans tri-center is pretty much the apogee of the thinking behind this.

What i had in mind for my surround speakers up to this point, just to match the style of everything was:

Kappa 9`s front, 2 kappa 6`s (I already own a pair of 6`s i want to put to use) head-to-head OR kappa video for center, if it`s possible and i have space for it, 2 kappa 5 OR 2 kappa video for surround and 2 kappa 5 OR 2 kappa video for surround back. And yes, i have read that these tweeters can be horizontally mounted :)

I just have to see what space i have and what to go for, this is an exciting project :D

For those of you that are curious:
The way i was thinking of connecting the kappa 6`s was if i have 2* 3 channel amps, i would connect the kappa 6`s speaker cables on two separate speaker outputs on the amps and then combine the signal for these 2 channels into 1 signal (a Y or SPLIT cable, this way i don`t have to fiddle around and risking anything with Ohm`s law) that would go to center channel signal on my surround processor, then connecting rest of the surround speakers to the remaining 4 speaker outputs of the 2 amps, then connect these up to surround L\R and surround back L\R of the surround processor. And of course the main kappa 9`s on their own big block, front L\R to the surround processor

This make any sense? Especially regarding the 2 kappa 6`s, as i never heard any mention of anyone who have connected 2 speakers to 1 center by this method before :dunno:

Opinions and inputs on this anyone? :)
