Infinity Renaissance 90 - EMIT (and EMIM) speakers - need repair ?

Hello All, please I need some advice.

I plan to buy the speakers in headline, but acc. to photos, the EMIT membranes are warped (please see photos). Of course I plan to see and listen to them, but it is 400 km from my home so I would like to know some advices before I run for them...

Is this even worth buying?
Will it need repair? Is it repairable?
Or is it "normal" state after the years and it will function normally for some "reasonable" time ? Then again - after some time - is it repairable ?

In my limited experience, those diaphragms should be fine. As long as you hear undistorted sound, everything should be OK. Though, to be 100% certain, if allowed by the seller, you could pop off the drivers and test continuity with a multimeter. But, if the pricing is acceptable, I'd go for it. A warning, aftermarket HE Emit's and Emim's are not available. No diaphragms either. So, be nice to them, as they can't be repaired.

One bit of concern I note: in the second pic, there could be some delamination of the traces in the upper left. This can cause distortion, and possibly reduced output (or even failure) if the traces short together. Hard to tell if it's that or just the diaphragm is wrinkled.

If the diaphragm isn't playing at all, if it isn't ripped or badly stretched, and just a trace is cut or torn, it can be repaired with conductive paint/ink. But it's not easy. Technically, loose traces can be glued back down, but that also isn't easy.

Wrinkles in the diaphragm are fine. I wouldn't mess with it, as long it sounds okay.

Understood, it should be fine, seller also mentioned they are playing with no problems. Anyway after some deeper thinking I will wait and try to find somethink overall prettier also regarding cosmetics on the boxes etc.
 
I have some old Infinity speakers with wrinkles in the EMIT. They sound fine. They are a completely different model, and are much older, but warped diaphragms do not seem to affect the sound.

My advice is to listen to them carefully, making sure all of the drivers work properly, before parting with your money.

It is possible to do repairs on EMITs and EMIMs (I repaired one of my EMITs, which was not working when I got it; the speakers were almost free because of that problem), but it is a bit tricky to do and is not fun, and if one is not careful, one will destroy it rather than repair it. I did a lot of searching online, looking at threads discussing repairs, and what one needed to do, and was extremely careful about it. If you are not really "handy," I would avoid buying any EMIT or EMIM that is not fully functional.

Because of the difficulty of dealing with them, I replaced the original fuses for my tweeters with fuses that are easier to blow, and will blow at a lower power than the stock fuses. So far, I have not blown any fuses, so, so far, probably it has not mattered for me. But I really don't ever want to take apart an EMIT again, as it is very troublesome and a mistake can easily destroy them, as the magnets are very powerful and one needs to use something to prevent the pieces from slamming together in a way that will possibly break the magnets and ruin it.

So, warped diaphragms are fine. Nonworking EMITs and EMIMs are very troublesome to repair, so make sure they work fine before parting with your money.
 
Maybe check AVA (American Vintage Audio) to inquire if they repair, and/or if they offer replacement diaphragms? I purchased replacement diaphragms for my QLS-4 EMITs, and fixed hem myself. They work great, and at least in my case were not too difficult once I got a hold of their service bulletin specifically for my EMIT versions.
 
Thank you guys for replies. I found r90s in better condition and I am going for them. The EMITs are wrinkled too, but less than the ones in the photo and the boxes are in better shape too. EMITs look “cleaner” too.

You're a lucky guy, as I've never seen 1 pair of Ren 90s in my area, let alone two...!

Thanks :) I am from central europe and there are quite a few pairs for sale in Germany. from 1000 euro/pair to over 2000 euro/pair for pieces in very very good condition.
