In addition to others mentioned already. For jazz id say John Abercrombie, John Scofield, Mike Stern are all well worth checking out, especially their earlier solo stuff. For funk Hiram Bullocks first two albums are way cool. Gamalon was a fusion band from late 80s that is also pretty fun listening. Here is a track of my favorite Stern album, be sure to stick around for 2cd solo that starts around 5:30 min mark.
