Instruments that you don´t like?

Hey @Dave1384, because I wasn't a killer trumpet player, and also because I was a "big guy," I played tuba through high school and also college...so, it got me
to Washington DC, tour of Western Europe (1972)...(from whence my ELAC STS344-E cart came from) and also Montreal...where I met my wife (clarinet player).
The tuba did alright by me! Listen to the last movement of Shostakovich Sym. No. 5...that was a hard sucker!

Now, back to matter at hand...I find oboe or English-horn very grating by themselves, even as solo in an orchestra, but in the mix where they stand out is fine.
As guitar player, distorted electric guitar isn't necessarily bad, but usually cannot stand the extreme distortion of heavy metal/death metal where it all just so much mush

I can't say I dislike the sound of any instrument played well, in an appropriate context. Banjo or accordion were my first thoughts, but I do love some zydeco and bluegrass. Frank Zappa playing the bicycle is something I could do without.

A Scottish friend of mine is a pretty decent bagpipe player. I've always had a bit of a fascination with them - their sound and how they work - and asked if I could try to play it. Ugh, anyone who can actually play bagpipes gets my respect! All I got was horrible squawking noises like a sci-fi alien. I didn't expect to play a song, but I had hoped for at least one note, like on just about any other instrument... nope just painful sounds! :yikes:

Q

I live on a lake. A neighbor on the same cove plays the bagpipes. On mornings when the cove is enveloped by a blanket of thick fog, the type that creates that certain damping effect, I can count on my nieghbor to lay down some eerie weirdness from his third floor balcony. It oozes through the 60 acre area like honey through the pores of an English muffin!
I dig it the most

That's a great story...

When I was staying at a small youth hostel in Scotland the host would wake everyone with bagpipes in the morning. They were not very loud (even played indoors). Talking to him later he commented; "Everyone comes down the stairs with a smile on their face...".

Almost 50 years ago and I still recall it clearly.

Nothing wrong with the tuba . You can also hear them with the Six Fat Dutchmen.

Same, had a neighbour down the bay at the cottage. He used to play the pipes in the evening when the lake was still. Loved it.

I think this is pretty amazing, even for those who don't like bagpipes. It's a bit long - 10 minutes - but is worth it.

I can't think of one I really dislike. My system is very revealing and I love listening to a wide variety of music with different instruments just for the....well, variety. Percussion seems to grab my attention quite a bit.

I'm not a big fan of the alto sax unless played by Paul Desmond. No one has ever had a sweeter tone on that instrument. So many alto saxophones can come off too honky. The OP doesn't care for the piano but it's the hardest to sound right and the one instrument many use to judge their system.

I think part of the reason that bagpipes drone a bit on the ear because they seem to have the same limitation as the harpsichord where the volume can't be varied. The harpsichord can only play at one volume level -- medium loud all the time. It seems like bagpipes can only play at two volume levels:

1. very loud
2. a squeak sound and then very loud :)
