In NJ I if there are items I really want I arrive no later than 5 AM, and start a list if no numbers are available; I am usually the first, but even then you have to be quick to decide and make your deal, as there are usually other guys with their own offer right behind. I've told that in places like Long Island it can get brutal but here it has always been civil.
We do it for the love of the gear, but there are many guys who do it to earn extra, they are usually the ones we compete with at sales. Most times the sellers err on the high or even very high side of pricing, thought I have gotten great deals about 20% of the time. Records and CD are usually at very decent pricing, but rarely do I find music I really want and the records are not well cared most of the time.
