Interesting Janis Subwoofer...

Got this today. Janis Subwoofer built in NY. Solid finger joint cabs (heavy) up firing slot loaded 15 inch replacement driver. The original driver both in the reviews I have read and the owner said was pathetic although they sound pretty good. The replacement is a nicer China made driver, heavy stamped steel basket, nothing special but robust. The cab is VERY nice and will be perfect after Howards has his way with them. Nice design and stout. These were semi spendy units back in the day. Came with an interesting AudioControl "Phase coupled Activator" rack mount processor with built in electronic XO. This unit does some half octiv add to the signal below 90hz and is highly adjustable via switches and dials. Reviews are mixed but pretty favorable on the restoring the bottom end effect and all liked the electronic XO (which i will use for the sub). We will see. After getting it home, doing some research and investigating what i got I'd say SCORE. Looking forward to trying them.

You can't just plop in a similar-sized driver and expect optimum results. I do hope the seller picked a driver with similar specs to the original. A few minor problems excepted, the Janis was a well-known and respected sub back in the day.

sorry... forgot to mention he has tons of nice gear, spica speakers, Dennon monoblocks, modded CDP dedicated room etc. Nice guy that knows his stuff. Had a very well regarded local shop I know choose the driver and sell it to him. He said it was for sure an upgrade sound wise. Have not tried it yet.

Might try it with these...

can you tell me more on teh woofer replacement on the M&K bookshelves. sorry to derail a bit here but you posted them and i remember they have different woofs than original...

So it's 1:15am guess what I have been doing? Playing with the sub and my electronic XO and other stuff. Got some very good and quite deep yet very controlled bass from that sub. It's going to be a keeper. Very tight and deep and never boomy. Integrate EZ for some reason. It is hard to explain.

The processor thing is interesting and does in fact give the feeling of super low bass. Will play with it more. Can easily be over used but can also be mixed in to add with out getting goofy.

Check the wood out on this one!!!!

Also shows the slot loading.

You can see the story of my experience with this model in that thread:

I had one that was caught in a minor flood, there was no easy way into the box- the bottom had to be pried off & replaced with new, if I remember correctly. I also remember the driver inside being pretty cheesy. It ended up getting repaired, but then sitting in my office for months, people wouldn't even take it home for free. To the curb it went, the amp/x-over to E-Bay.

Nice looking cabinet, though. I can talk to my friend that did the repair, maybe he has some hints for you.

Mine never quite lived up to the promise of that pretty cabinet. I remember my Janis x-over/amp testing at ~45 watts, too...not enough headroom for the job. Glad you're enjoying yours...

I have 2 nice M&K subs, one Pioneer Ok sub and a good Realistic sub, all 12" all sound good. This one blows them away with how tight and low it goes. Maybe they chose a great driver as i really like it. It only fires out the front of the sub, I originally thought it was vented all the way around. I would love to find a twin and have two of these. :thmbsp:
