Intermittent Dial Lights on Sansui 8080

Hi all,

I have a nice Sansui 8080 (not db). Love it.

But the dial lights like to cut in and out.

Dial lights were fully replaced with original bulbs from the awesome dgwojo just recently and installed properly.

A good whack on the top of the unit sometimes helps, it can fix the problem (light section turns back on). A whack can also cause a lit section to cut out. One whack made the unlit section move from the far right to the far left portion.

I suspect that this is a semi-common problem relating to connections, but I don't know where to start.

Any suggestions? Switches/pots have been sufficiently de-oxited, btw.

Ah, ok. So the opposite side of this unit has the solder connections that are failing? Will they appear ok but in fact be failing? Because while I haven't looked yet, I am half expecting them to appear normal, but maybe they still need to be redone. Thanks.

Yes, the circuit board on the opposite side of your pic needs the solder joints reflowed. Sometimes the breaks are so small they can't be seen.

In your previous pics it showed the two end lamps out at different times. I'd look real close at the points where those two lamp holders are attached to the board to see if you can detect the breaks.
 
My 661 had the same problem. Has a similar light board, re-flowed all lamp solder joints. Still has the original bulbs and has been ok since.

Yes, a good whack made that change happen, from one end being out to the other end being out. I'll look into this. Can a DMM test for continuity help to detect this? Because maybe it'll be visible, but maybe not.
 
The Pioneer SX-780 regulators get hot and have a habit of getting cold solder joints causing the unit to go into fault. I read in the forums where somebody suggested reflowing the solder on all three of them to see if that would fix things.
I first looked them over real, real good to find them all looking great. I reflowed the solder and it was now working correctly.
 
This is a very common issue with the 8080, 9090DB and similar models, so I'm not surprised you are having this issue. Just reflow all the fuselamps solder joints (watch out for the dial cord and plastic light housing!)
 
You guys are correct on these units having this issue, mine has it on one lamp as well. I did purchase a new to me dial lamp housing just to have one. I need to practice my soldering to fix it.
