Is Audio Karma intended to be a vintage hifi site?

I think the 2 channel crowd is just older and enjoy good old fashion quality and performance...just like gearheads love musle cars and hot rods. Pretty simple IMO.

you have heard most of the things i could think to say and I will add.. there is no aspect of audio related questions that you could think to post that someone here can't answer or help point you in the correct direction to find the answer... great folks...great attitudes..sincere..helpful .. i mean why go anywhere else

The first thing I noticed upon my initial visits is the incredible breadth of knowledge and experience amongst AKers. Without a doubt, there's room for everyone from the "open the box and plug it in" types to those who'll go as far as wind their own transformers. And we're all tied together by our love for the content...music. (And, to a slightly lesser extent, video) Good music is timeless...and just plain sounds better on good gear. CDs played through tube gear sound sweet...but they sound pretty damn good through current high-tech solid-state gear too! I'm also pleased by the lack of bias shown here. (Bose and White Van excepted) We'd be a pretty boring bunch if all we were devoted to was audio...thus the forums for food, drink, cars we lust after, cool aircraft and all the rest. The only additional forum I could see being added would be a spot for Hams. A little biased there, since I'm a longtime Ham wannabe who checks his mailbox daily for "The Ticket"...but there's a number of Hams sprinkled through the membership and it'd be cool to have a common "Ham Shack" to visit. Otherwise, AK is an excellent example of "one-stop shopping"!! The collective Karma is a powerful force indeed.

New gear, old gear, free tech support, cars, movies, dog pictures, music, gear for sale, food, booze and oh so much more.

Here's my 2 cents... I think the reason AK has such a heavy vintage following is that in the last ten years or so there is very little REASONABLY priced 2 channel gear being produced. I'm in the metro Detroit area and the stores in this area (the Grammophone, Alma's Hifi, Audio-Video systems) have gone to mostly Home Theater with little emphasis on 2 channel music, Audio Dimension being the sole exception. However Audio Dimension is a very "High End" store carrying Audio Research, Magnepan and other fine but pricey equipment that frankly is out of my realm of sanity. Why I think many people (myself especially) gravitate to the vintage stuff is that it reminds us of a simpler time a time when the music was so real and raw and meaningful and in many cases was written, performed and produced by the band playing it! Much of todays stuff is processed fluff with a shelf life of about a month at best, so what does this have to do with this being a vintage site? I dunno maybe everything and maybe nothing, what it means for me is I get such a thrill spinning a Steely Dan record on my 30 year old Technics turntable and seeing the glowing lights on my 30 year old Marantz 2275 receiver and lastly the smooth powerful sounds that flow out of my 30 year old Advents that I simply never felt with the newer stuff that I had been using. The other thing is there is SO MUCH vintage stuff out there that its more fun to talk about finding a cherry so and so or refurbishing that one piece of gear you've been lusting after and that to me is what makes this part of our great hobby such a joy. One last analogy, about 6 years ago I was lucky enough to acquire a mint 72' Corvette (classic muscle cars my other passion), its red on red and its beautiful, anyway I work with a couple of guys that drive newer Vettes and frankly the performance difference between the two is a joke, the newer ones are faster, they handle much better and the ride and build quality is light years ahead of my 72', BUT when we all go for cruise they would be the first to admit that the 72' gets ALL of the attention, why do you suppose that is? Its the same thing when someone is over the house and see's my mint 2275 they're like "WOW you have a Marantz! I haven't seen one of those in years" how do you put a price on that. Sorry for rambling here and I'm not even sure this applies to the original question of "Is this a vintage site" but for me this explains why it feels like it is.

Huh? I'm sorry, I must have dozed off!:boring: Could you repeat that? JUST KIDDING! (disclaimer:thmbsp:).

Some good points there. For me it's about a bunch of good people who all like music (of ALL types and kinds) who also share knowledge and experience with others about music, gear, planes, trains and automobiles and life in general. Basically, it's a community.

i'm here, and 1980's gear is my forte. i'm not blind at all to the legendary quality of the 1970's; i would like to own an SX-1980, but the 1980's units are just when the stars were aligned for me. just the right combination of old-fashioned Hi-Fi quality and futuristic high technology.:music:

My kit breaks down this way:

JBL L150A - ~1977-1978
Yamaha C-2 ~1977-1979
Adcom GFA-545 ~1985-1987
Denon CDP-2560 - 1993
Fisher FM-2421 - ~1979-1980.

At any given time, I've had 4 decades of gear in my main listening setup. I am partial to the late 1970's to mid 1980's, however, especially when it comes to amplification.
