Driving into work this morning, I'm listening to "Exile on Main Street" and the thought about The Stones being "The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band" back then, when I wondered who would hold that title today?

The more I thought about it, I couldn't come up with an answer. I tossed out any band from my time, as they/we're all dinosaurs now, and wondered who the modern day Beatles/Stones/Zeppelin/Who are? Who sells out stadium shows and is in the news all the time?

I can't think of anybody. Well, at least not rockers. Justin Bieber, it a teeny bopper of the hour, rappers like Eminem and Jay-Z aren't really rockers, Kid Rock is pretty big I think, but I'm in Detroit so he may be overblown. And the Foo Fighters rock, but aren't they older and basically Nirvana redux?? My girls in college listen to some bands, but the ones that may rock aren't huge names.

Are they any bands out there with members in their 20s that would be considered major rockers? Guys that can fill concert halls and dominate the airwaves??

I'm coming up blank here guys..:dunno:

I've been at Black Keys and Arcade Fire shows with more than 80k+ plus spectators. There were more than 20k for The Strokes and Mumford and Sons, to name a few. Jack White either solo or in any band incarnation draws many thousands.

I've heard some of them, but would you consider any of the the world's greatest? It just seems to me that the genre ain't what it used to be.

The World's Greatest will always be England's Newest Hitmakers.

While there are plenty of current kick-ass rock & roll bands (Black Keys, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Brian Jonestown Massacre...), there is a noted lack of rock & roll "pop" bands these days.

As my wife said after watching "Crossfire Hurricane," "what's a young boy to listen to these days." The pop charts are dominated by Gaga, Perry, and One Direction, with some Pit Bull thrown in for good measure.

Rockin out to a good band is a Jungian ritual that I'm afraid my son is missing out on. We really need some good "dude" music for the younger masses. I'm sure when he gets in college, indie and hipster bands will fill the bill, but what about now?

Average age of the Rolling Stones is greater than the average age of the U.S. Supreme Court. Dinosaurs we are...

"It just seems to me that the genre ain't what it used to be."

Actually I think the genre is far better than it has ever been. Part of the reason there aren't as many super groups is because radio no longer is the sole exposure point. When I was in High School crap groups like REO Speedwagon and Journey were far and away the most popular. It was simply because that's what the record companies were pushing at FM station at that point.

U2 is an 80s band. It's 2012. OK Computer had something not so far from Exile status in '97. I guess it's about time for a replacement, not so sure there's been one yet. I think innovation (with or without artistic merit), you know, a significantly new aesthetic is required to make that sort of megaband the OP is wondering about. Nobody really knows how to analyze this stuff, though. Truth is, pop music and rock and roll just aren't very old yet. Nobody has any idea what's happening to music because nothing like the last 100 years ever happened before.

" The pop charts are dominated by Gaga, Perry, and One Direction"

True but that is hardly different from decades past..................

True, and deservedly so but I think the OP wanted young bands that were capable of the same.

Yeppers, ya nailed it Bud.

The Stones kicked off their 50th Anniversary Tour this week I think. Who were the young mega rockers last year that will have that kind of longevity?? :dunno:

Actually, I've seen REO open for Wishbone Ash a couple of back to back nights back in the late 1970s. There's nothing wrong with a little bit of Gary Richrath rocking out on "Golden Country"

"Tuna Fish" made them rich, famous, and lousy....

Okay but in actuality I went to see the Stones in 90 or 91 and the place was half full.

No, rock and roll is not dead. I can't think of any young bands who would fill Stadiums but there are plenty who fill smaller venues. I think the music scene is more fragmented than ever. That doesn't help. Pop seems to have taken over the "air waves" again but that seems to be a cyclical thing. It seems like every half decade or so, someone says rock and roll is dead. Then out of nowhere, The Stones or The Clash or Nirvana or someone else kicks it back into high gear.

You want bands who released their first album last year who will still be together after fifty years ?

Jack White.

I saw them in '97 and they packed a football stadium.
