Is the electrohome S-600 a good receiver!

Just bought the S-600 electrohome receiver, just wondering if anyone had any insight into it.

It appears to be something like what you would find in a mid-century console stereo. Collectible? Certainly. Great sound? Not so much. That's not to say it can't sound good, but I wouldn't use it as my main receiver if you know what I mean. Those are certainly rare, so it is a good find.

I was the owner of that stereo. The exact one in the pictures. Imho it looks better then it sounds. One of the worst sounding stereos ive heard to date. It has more value as a peice of furniture then a actual stereo. (right now the one i had is being used for a mcm furniture staging company). Also note that it only has 1 aux input. Which is tape in.

I'm sure that was produced right after the switch from Tube electronics to Solid state.Its too bad as ive recently picked up a totl Electrohome tube console that had a stand alone el84 PP tube amp inside.I unsoldered the unbilical cord that linked it to the tube radio/pre section and just replace coupleing caps in it yesterday.In a blind test with any tube amp under a grand on the market youd be hard pressed to tell which was which it sounds that good

Mine was date coded to 1966ish. As i recall. Tubes were being phased out around then.

Its funny how the sound quality could go down so badly within a yr of two of the transisition from tube to Solid State electronics.,heres a pic of my electrohome tube amp..

So a new member starts a thread to ask about his recent purchase, and you come on his thread announcing that it's one of the worst you ever heard? Yeah I know what it is too but I'm not going to bring a new guy down.

I have the PLANAR SR 2040 receiver and it sounds quite nice. I think it is a much later SS unit with an almost Marantz look. This Electrohome piece is difficult to find information about. I would like to find a schematic / service manual for mine to do a recap.

EDIT: Duh - just found the information at HiFiEngine. No service manual.

I read the brochure and it has "Built-in Four Channel Speaker Matrixing". Is that Quad decoding or just an ambient circuit that you would still need a Quad decoder for?

Just a thought. For those looking for service manual and wondering more about it. The s600 is literally ripped from a big stereo console. And put in a stereo case. There is 2 different version i have seen and 2 different colours. Try hunting for info about it backwards. Type in electrohome console stereo and you may find what your looking for.

He asked if it was good, don't shoot down the messenger.

My father acquired a Leak Stereo 35, a similarly early solid state
state design, with similarly mundane sound quality in real hifi terms.

The S600 looks well cool, and is well collectable for than reason.

As others have said though, you don't want to use it in your main
system, but it would likely be fine in a second system, used mainly
for its tuner and say a plugged in media player of some sort.
