Hello
Before I buy a Sansui 5000X
I wanted to see if anyone here had experience with one.
Thank you for reading this!

The answer is yes,I have owned all three of this series 5000,A and X and they are capacitor coupled which gives these a wonderful tube like sound with punch 55 watts per channel I believe , the 5000 and the 5000 A have been given to other family members who just love their sound the tuner is able to pull in stations even without an FM antenna hooked up.
I have had all the units recapped and the 5000 had the driver boards reworked they had issues with 1040 boards, the updated boards on A and X are f 6013 check because later A and early X still had the problem 1040 boards. Ken

Nice sounding Sansui cap-coupled unit. These old Sansui models are solidly built. My 5000A still had the F-1040 boards in it that I rebuilt also doing the @skippy124 mod replacing the bias diodes and pre-driver transistors. From what I have read the main problem was the square bias diodes mounted on top of the pre-driver transistors of the F-1040 design would go open leading to thermal runaway apparently could be so dramatic it damaged the board. Apparently those Origin diodes were not the most reliable.

Generally you see the old cap-coupled Sansui units talked well of from the lowly 350 and 800 to the 2000 and 5000 series and later receivers and the various series of amplifiers. The cap-coupled designs faded out in the early 70s as the direct-coupled units with their lower distortion numbers took over the market.

I suspect Sansui may have felt the need to go above and beyond with the board replacements to salvage a reputation after the reliability issues of their early top two transistor receiver lines the 5000/A/X series and the next level down 3000/3000A seeries. Also when some F-1040 boards failed it damaged the board those were going to need a new board anyway.

Keep in mind these units are over 50 years old now.

I have an A which is nearly the same and I kinda love it. I found it interesting that the bass and trebble pots have their own balance. I have mine connected to some Dynco A-10s and even Whatshername is happy

Most assuredly. I have an A and an X, only minor differences between the two. Love the sound, and the look.
