Is this amp suitable for hi-fi?

Big Bill

Summertime Rolls.....
Hello gang, I'd like to know if this Wurlitzer amp is suitable for high-fi or better used for a guitar amp?

Thanks in advance, Bill. :thmbsp:

If you want to use it close to it's current incarnation (mono push-pull using that output transformer), then it would probably make a pretty nice guitar amp if you recycled the iron and maybe the sockets.

If you wanted to use it for stereo use, I'd ditch the output transformer and build something like a stereo single ended amp with the power transformer. It has the capacity for at least pair of 6V6, and what looks to be a 5U4 rectifier.

The power transformer will likely be the best part you pull from that chassis.

Thanks guys...

Thanks Bob and Squid. Perhaps she will make someone a fine guitar amp someday. :dunno:

Can't really tell by the photos, but does that thing contain any output tubes, or is it just a preamp section? I am currently using a Wurlitzer mono organ amplifier, model 7039 with a pair of 7027 output tubes in push/pull. Still going strong!

Yes it does, two metal 6v6 GT's.

Ah, yes! I didn't see the tubes sticking out the back! Guess it's time for glasses for thses old eyes! :D

Hmmm... lots of tubes and circuitry in there. Could it be a reverb or vibrato unit with amp included. Five preamp tubes seems like too much for a simple amplifier.

That's normal for an organ amplifier as they usually utilize two keyboards, bass pedals, and vibrato.

My amplifier has 5 preamp tubes. It also contains a phono jack.

Are these features a good thing to have with a guitar amp? :headscrat

Yes. More preamp tubes allows more options and gain. A lot of guitar amps use cascading gain stages....one 12ax7 into another into another for more preamp distortion. That said there are also many guitar amps with a single output, one preamp tube and a rectifier. It all depends on the sounds and power you are looking for. I've had a number of guitar amps made from organ amps, old PA amps, projector amps etc. Some were ok, some would put $3,000.00 boutique amps to shame. I love these old re-purposed amps for guitar, they have unique sounds , are built like tanks and look a lot cooler than anything for sale at Guitar Center.
