I recently acquired some gear in... questionable condition, but figured for the price it was worth a gamble. It appeared from pictures that I might end up with a minimum of 2 good working speakers, and likely several pieces destined for the great gig in the sky.

The fates must have been smiling upon me, because I now have a lovely new office stereo, consisting of a pair of NHT Classic 3 speakers, powered by a Marantz SR4002. I had forgotten how wonderful these deceptively small speakers sound, and frankly they rock as well.

There is also a mediocre Onkyo receiver, and NHT Classic 3C Center channel that are in decent shape. The rest of the gear, unfortunately, is in rough condition.



-The other pair of NHT Classic 3's has severely dimpled tweeters and mids, one appears to have been dropped as the cabinet is cracked. Despite this, they both seem to function fine.

- The NHT Sub 10 powers on, but has very limited/low output. NHT will repair for $165 (plus shipping), but the cabinet is in rough shape.



Unsure of what to do with the sub. Seems a shame to toss something that is well-made and likely only needs <$10 worth of parts.

I think the best course of action is to gift the NHT 3's and Onkyo receiver to a budding audiophile who will appreciate them. Seems appropriate since it was 20 years ago that an older engineer at 3M gave me his Kenwood KA-3500, KA-7100, and pair of JBL L100's, which was the equipment that kickstarted my love of vintage gear.

You might call it... Audiokarma? :)

You could pull the subwoofer speaker from the cabinet and test it. Maybe wire it to the Onkyo and see it it will go louder. If the driver is ok, you can always get a new subwoofer plate amp from P.E. for less than $165.
 
I'd definitely nose around in that sub - before shipping it off or tossing. (We'll I wound't toss it even after nosing around).

Driver seems fine (aside from dimpled dust cap) as it will play plenty loud with signal from another receiver. The amp turns on, light turns green and can hear relay click. I can just hear a bit of output using LFE input and volume maxed out. I spoke with an engineer at NHT, and he said it could be the volume or crossover potentiometer, or something else. I have limited troubleshooting capability when it comes to electronics, and the symptoms don't tell me enough to go searching a specific area.

Does moving those pots while its running have any effect? You could jumper the pots with a resistor low in their range to see if things get louder.

Or just jump straight to cleaning with Deoxit

Nice, I really like my NHT SuperOne speakers, which were dirt cheap (and even in fairly good shape, minus a few small cosmetic scuffs). They're good enough that I'd rate them pretty highly even if they weren't so cheap.
