Is this guy serious?

Too funny. If you can't see them or hear them, how are you supposed to GET them?
BUT, if I did WANT them I would show up (and who knows where that might be) with a purchase and sale agreement that indicated if they were not in good working condition when I hooked them up that I would get my money back. After all and since he's referring to Ebay, the purchaser has the right to return them when they purchase there.
Or perhpas you could ask him to get the wife to leave since she is scared or strangers.
It will be interesting to see what transpires with this dude tho.

That's the way to go.
Too many tire kickers who just want to come by and listen or audition without the intent of purchasing.
You bring cash, pay me, then listen. If something is wrong, then we can work on it.

I see nothing wrong here. He is saying, this is not Wal-Mart and the public is not welcome. If the right buyer comes along and flashes some cash, the seller will demonstrate.

Why did he even mention the wife? WIERDO!

Offer him 700, stand behind it for a week, then knock off 50 bucks every week. That ad ain't gonna inspire buyers to line up on his doorstep.

He'd increase his chances just by posting a pic with the grill off so it "looks" like a lascala.

Sadly, if they look anywhere near as good in person as they do in the pics, they're easily worth the asking price.

Nothing can kill a good deal like a few eccentric personality quirks.

Here is the problem. You let people in your home. They are unknown to you and could have more than "a few eccentric personality quirks." You have to behave like the U.N. Secretary General because the buyer now knows where you live.

pretty nice looking and may be worth it but in my opinion a lousy veneer job with the grain on the sides running in one direction and opposite on the top

I don't think so.

Okay revised...
You bring cash and confirm you'll buy if everything is as I described, audition and pay me. :D
One of my friend was selling Sansui G8000 and some custom built speakers.
The buyer came, listened to the speakers, changed different types of music.
Appreciated that we auditioned them for him and thanked us and said he can't buy these.
WTH?

so you're saying if I go to best buy or any other stereo store I have to pay for an audition. Maybe he simply didn't like them and didn't want to hurt feelings by saying he didn't like the way they sounded, looked or even your friend. If you want to sell something the buyer has to want it too

SoCalSam- I took the ad to mean you CAN'T audition them or look at them first.
They look to me like the guy construction-adhesived some flooring onto a kitchen cabinet or cardboard box, stretched some panty hose over the front and bought 2 Klipsch badges on e-bay. I understand the wife not wanting strangers in the house but I gotta wonder; stranger than whom?

My point exactly.
I'm not best buy or any public store, it's my private residence.
Buyer should not come to my house just to pass time and listen to music, go to a store.
As I mentioned, if buyer has genuine interest in buying, he'll bring cash and confirm that he'll buy if everything is as described.
When I go to buy something in CL, I already know about the speakers or talk to the seller that I'm interested but need to hear them first.
If I see Polk SDA's and want to buy them, I already have an idea of what they sound like even if they don't sound good at seller's place. They may need crossover upgrades, proper setup etc...
However, if the drivers are not working, frozen, cabinets not as described in the ad, that is a good reason to back out.

PS: If buyer has not decided, he should let seller know that he wants to hear them first.
And in the original ad mentioned here, buyers like that should not even bother him.

actually when you sell something on cl and/or eBay you become a store albeit a very small one with a unique item. Tire kickers happen in any sales situation get over it. Now you can try and set the terms of the sales setting as is the seller on this cl ad, but as a buyer I have no obligation to buy until I actually come to a mutually agreed upon price and hand over payment

True and I've seen very few, I think around 3 out of 60 + transactions.
I live in a joint housing so I don't worry much.
But sellers with single family house, especially out of the way and expensive items in house are more wary. May be seller is one of them and it's his item and his terms. If I were looking for La Scala and thought price is fair, I'd have to agree to seller's terms or not contact him at all.
