Is Your Cartridge Worth More Than Your Turntable?

cart $1200
TT $300

that said, I bought my TT before the vintage craze & I still think old Empire's are undervalued...that thing sounds amazing

If you look at the prices I paid, I spent quite a bit more on my cartridge than my turntable. My Technics SL-230 turntable was $25 plus shipping in 2006, back when good used turntables could be bought for almost nothing. I spent an hour or so cleaning and lubricating it to make the automatic features and speed adjustment pots work properly. My Longhorn Grado Green cartridge was $99 in 1999, and the 8MZ stylus I bought for it was another $100.

If you look at current prices for the cartridge and stylus and inflation-adjusted pricing for the turntable, the situation changes. AVA's current price on the Longhorn Grado Green1 is $225, and the 8MZ stylus recently saw a price hike to $150. The 1978 retail price of the turntable adjusts to $549 at 2015 economics, more than the cartridge and stylus combined.

My Grace cartridge is currently worth at least as much or more as my PL-570 but the rest of my carts are not even close.
