Just got a pair from the thrift for cheap. Any idea what they are like and how the perform? Can't hook up until I get home from business trip :(

In the back of my truck and not home or near a camera. Picked these up on business trip. Next week I can snap pics :)

Are these J320s? JBL's J line were strictly consumer line from the late 80s iirc. Quality wasn't very good aside from the cabinets. The drivers used a rubber surround that quickly rotted and cracked. The magnet glue on the woofers wasn't stable either as the magnets often are found at the bottom of the cabs.

The TOTL had a nice dome tweeter/mid/10" woofer/10" passive iirc but a pair I bought on a lark never got repaired due to woofer issues and was tossed during my recent move.

Not as bad as JBL's Radiance line but close.

Yeah, they are the J line. However, I hooked them up to a friend Kenwood receiver at work as he wanted to know if the thing worked - sounded terrible, grainy and harsh. I thought oops, bad $20 but maybe further testing?

So I drug out my TEAC AG-V8520 receiver that I know is in good shape and bingo - these babies woke right up. Stuck on a CD of Buddy Guy and we were rocking. Very impressive with the right power behind them :) Now I'm thinking about not selling them :scratch2:

Glad you found the right gear to make them sing. If they sound good with BG, I'd be quite happy with them. :)

If they were mine, I'd remove the woofers/mid and throw a bead of epoxy around the magnet/basket seam so the magnets will stay put (see previous post).

On a tangent, what Kenwood receiver did your friend have? Was it vintage or AV/surround age?

They're good enough ...

I didn't look at the number, but it was vintage, like 1970's or so. Mid powered at say 60 WPC. I think it had a couple issues like PS caps may be gone and just not enough omph for these speakers. I suspect the rap they get is from under-powering them :scratch2:

The TEAC is 110 WPC. Even though we didn't have it turned very high (could still talk loudly over them), it was making all the right sounds. Impressive tight bass and a CD of early FM Then Play On (remastered) had clean residual tape hiss from the silk dome tweeters. I think these little three ways resolve pretty well :thmbsp:

I'll pop the woofers and drop some epoxy around the mags to make sure these stay together :)

May be more pairs out there cheap?
