JBL 4430's to complete my dream system

I'm not sure how long I'll have this setup but all the components are comming together to create what I have always thought of as my dream system. I now will have JBL 4430's, a Pioneer SX1980, and a Technics SL1100 turntable as my main system. I'm not sure the house will survive long if I crank it too high but it should sure sound great.

I'm expecting much more hearing loss after listeng to this system but you only live once! :D

I have all the drivers, networks and L-pads to build a second set of 4430's also, just need to do cabinets, four at once would be a interesting experience. :yikes:

Pictures to follow, the 4430's are being restored and should be finished in about 3 weeks.

If I may be so bold as to ask, can I have the JBL's when you're finished building them?:music:

Hey 89grand, congrats on 3000 posts.

IIRC, some of these 4430 components came from your state, maybe close to your city. Keep looking they're out there.

RS, are you building the cabinets? You previous thread was so long ago, I can't remember.

Thanks.

Every time I see cool JBL stuff locally, it's either way out of my price range, or it's at a time when I can't spend the money.

There was a complete set of 4430's a while back, but I couldn't afford them at the time. I guess I'll just have to settle for my L80t's until my luck turns around.:sigh:

I have had all the material to build the cabinets for months but just have not had the time to do them yet. I found a complete set that only needs a refoam and cabinet repair so I grabbed them. I truly hope I like their sound since I have not ever listened to a pair. I think a bigger house will be needed if I get all 4 up and running behind the SX1980.

Oh I'll let you have them, just bring the Brinks truck with ya! :D

Are you building the grills as well? If so, would you mind sharing their dimensions? Thanks N

I have actual blueprints at the shop that show everything needed to build grills. When I can I will try to post everything so anyone can get that info.

Here are a few tid bits.

Cool; thanks, although seeing veneer on concrete always sets my teeth on edge. :D (I suspect those were the seller's pictures?)

They have a metal bracket around them so the wood is protected, the were hanging in a big meeting room upside down, maybe the spiders on the woofers will act brand new since I will have them right side up. :scratch2:

Ah, saw those recently, do you have the item number? I remember seeing the metal braces/mounts, look to be custom made. At least they protected the speakers but probably left some type of mark on the veneer, but usually the JBL veneers clean up pretty well.

Edit: Found it - These came out of Flagstaff, wow, seems a lot of JBL monitors are/were in AZ. Nice price, was it hard to get them shipped to you?

It's funny because the 4430 parts I aquired before came from AZ also.
The shipping of these isn't cheap, they are around 150 lbs each with the steel attached. But the seller helped a bunch in finding the best way to get it done. They have some minor scratches and screw holes to fix but the corners are perfect. I can pretty much fix anything thats made of wood so I think they should be easy to get right. I actually have them sold for almost twice what I paid but I'm holding out for now. If I like them as much as I think I will when finished, they might be my one set of speakers that will stay.
At any rate, it should be a fun restore with equity, my favorite!

Heh, pays to pounce on a bargain, you can always make it up later. Sad to say there was a pair in Ventura, California, a bit weathered that sold for about the same price but the seller got some grief for some hidden issues (bad driver?). Also, I saw a CL ad for a pair, similarly priced to yours, in Vero Beach - ad long gone (early Sept), but probably would have saved a bit on shipping if they were in decent condition. There's a few that have popped up in Miami although they want and arm, leg and testicle for them. :D

Yeah, I have seen a few up for sale, and lost out on some also. It pays to keep searching and be patient I guess. I like the fact these were hanging and not being moved around where they would get beat up. I have some 4612OK's that have the mini cheeks and really like them so these 4430's keep me happy for some time. I'm tempted to get all four hooked up someday, maybe it will happen but it needs to be a big venue.:scratch2:

Maybe something like this for the 4612's:

Just received my refoam kit for my 4430 woofers from Rick Kobb, sure been a while since I refoamed and 15 inchers. Can't wait to get these speakers finished!

sweet sounding!

I was able to get the 4430's back together and give them a try, sure are sounding great. Now I can say I have listened to a set of these, I've seen many great reviews, so it's nice to hear them for myself. The low end is some of the best I have heard, and the cheeks speak for themselves. :D
