JBL 4530 cabinet

Hi AK!

Although I’ve seen the 4530 cabinets around - can someone explain how the top mounted horn works in conjunction with the 15” woofer?

I often see some sort of crossover mounted on top next the horn. How are all these things secured? Is there a particular measurement for the horn to be mounted so it sounds the best?

and also, if the two JBL woofer/horn are different ohms (woofer is 32ohm and horn is 16ohm) would this cause an issue?

hi! And unfortunately no, this is just a hypothetical purchase. But it would be a d-130b paired with a 175 horn. Is there a difference between the flat back and round back?

If you mean flat back woofers
They are the oldest ones no
Labels on the back but stickers on the side of the magnets.
The cones on them are likely very brittle
As well as the paper surrounds
I do prefer the 16 ohm gray 175’s
Probably have the big black square n1200’s
Xovers

I did find a few pictures/examples of the JBL speakers in the 4530 cabinet with a top mounted horn. Murakami’s 4530 is the one that has gotten me started down this rabbit hole.

If I decided to go the 175 route, could I just install the 1” 175 type on top instead of the Hartsfield Horns? And would I then need to install the additional tweeters? And how would one go about installing the horns? Is it a wooden panel above the cabinet that the horn would be screwed into?

And the crossover would then be attached to the top of the cabinet next to the horn?

Yes the 175’s go up to almost 15k no special mounting necessary of horns or Xovers. Likely you or the next owner might change them out anyway
The wife acceptance factor for those cabinets are pretty Low
My pair of those Scoops are in my boat house
Moth balls in them to keep the critters out

LOL ah yes the acceptance factor. Important to keep in mind. Might be in for another type of free concert

You should know that these bins are medium throw, and don’t really do well in smaller rooms. The low end is limited. Almost Nothing below 45-50 hz
Not even that with a 130a/b Woofers .
They are great for outdoor block parties

That is also really great to know. Would it be possible then to use the 130a/b + 175 horn in a configuration for a smaller-med size room in a mono configuration? Would another kind of cabinet design work better?

Hi alfmonster, you might want to check out the JBL model C40 Harkness. This is a little smaller and is a lay down version of the 4350. It also incorporates the high frequency horn in the front baffle. It uses the 130A and DHL175 also the N1200 xover. I liked my 4350’s a little more on their sides too, but mine are setup as 4 way and biamped

I have the stand up version C34’s
130 a’s and dlh 175 and n1200.

The LE175 is warmer than the LE85 at the low end, but has no real top end is best supplemented with the 077/2405.

That’s such great information! Those c40 cabinets are beautiful. And @Nyjblbob - the c34 cabinets will all support the 130 a/b?

A question I had was why would someone pair a 32ohm d130b with the 16ohm 175? Is there a positive sonic difference to this combination?

Also, would it be possible to add on a multicell James Lansing horn to sit at top the cabinet? What would that require - and also would this be okay sonically? I added some pictures - not mine.

A question that came to mind also was whether the external horn would clash with the horn already in the c40 cabinet or how that setup would work.

Not really. Would probably be better to do a HF compensation through the crossover network. I.e., use a high frequency by-pass cap/resistor to increase the top end. I do this on my four surround speakers that use 2425 drivers on butt cheeks. JBL also does this on various models including the 4430s.

I was never happy with the N1200 130A/LE175/potato masher in that I could never properly dial in the horn. I did much prefer the lower midrange of the 130A to the AlNiCo 2235s (converted AlNiCo 2205s) that replaced them though.

I used to run them using an L-pad across the crossover output terminals leaving the N1200 at its loudest setting and used an 075 and later 2405 for the top end.

Please bear with me, as I’m really new to JBL speakers..So going off this, and just to be clear in my own mind about this setup, it would be a nice setup if the 77/2405 was installed in that spot next to the 130a/b woofer and then the 175 horn added externally on top of the cabinet?
