JBL 4647 for home use?

There was a dozen pair complete with horns in Memphis last year. I no longer have the contact info tho, apparently.... :banghead:

Still have that RC?

[Price may be lower, now, if they're still there.... ]

I will have to look. Contacted them twice by email and never got a response. Maybe I still do in my pm's somewhere. I'll go a lookin. :D

Well, here it is! I had to use 3/4" particle board for the front baffle instead of 1" (the rest of the 4647 is 3/4") since I couldn't find a local source and the ports are Staples brand mailing tubes but other than that, I think it turned out pretty good for my first homemade cabinet. I almost went with butt joints but I had access to a table saw so I decided to make it look nice. Every joint is sealed with liquid nails so it should withstand just about anything.

I finally found my 4647A's and they were right in my own backyard!

Yesterday, I was at home with this dang flu crud. Popped on to Craigs and there they were, about 30 miles from me fresh out of a church and sitting in this guys garage. I bit the bullet and hit the road, flu/fever and all. It was about all I could do to get them loaded and unloaded without pukeing but I pulled it off.

Three 4647A's with 2226HPL are now in the house, finally!

Thanks Zilch! It's been a long Quest as you know :D
Took me a year to get the horns I'm using with them now, and I've never built a better system.

You show us yours, and I'll show you mine.

[Gotta be with HORNZ, tho.... ;) ]

I would be glad to but at the moment, I am running Tannoy Ardens in my main system. I am in the process of ordering a pair of 500Hz salad bowls from Dr. Bruce I would imagine they won't be here for a spell.

In the mean time, I will be preparing the 4507 cabs for either a black finish or veneer.

They are packed away in the garage but I would be glad to post a ugly teaser shot of the 4647A's :D

Here they are in all their beige paint glory. It was all I could do yesterday to just make room for them and get them stowed away.

You will just have to use you imagination I guess :D

I can't believe its taken me this long to get back to this project...

Due to numerous delays and distractions, I decided to go the Econo-wave route. Bought another 2226HPL off eb-ay, JBL PT horns and Selenium 220Ti drivers from PE. After careful consideration, I decided to biamp and bought a cheap analog xover with CD horn EQ. The xover is a Crate Pro Audio LS4 that can cross anywhere from 500Hz up to over 2KHz. I used an Adcom 535 as the amp for the first stage of the experiment. Its a decent sounding dual-mono amp with 60wpc of power and sensitive clipping indicators. Not that I didn't have bigger amps available - I just wanted to start slow and work my way up the ladder.

Since I didn't have time to throw together an RTA/mic measurement system, I decided to see how it sounded in its basic form (~1.5KHz xover point and CD horn EQ). I fed an ipod into a cheap DJ mixer and ran it into the Crate. Slowly I increased the bass level to a moderate listening level. Next it was time to bring up the HF level. While the HF was acceptable, the midrange lacked warmth and bass lacked the slam I was expecting from the 2226. It didn't come alive until I tried a bootleg of Roger Waters Wall 2010 tour. This audience recording was done with high quality stealth mics and sounds exceptional except for muddy bass. When I cranked it to the point of clipping on the bass amp - see why I picked an amp with clipping indicators - the 2226 started to strut its stuff. While it wasn't pulling off a brown note, I was finally feeling the bass I was looking for. I ran it for a few hours to break in the woofer since the ebay seller said it was freshly reconed. The breakin definitely seemed to help but I am going to add a Behringer Ultra-Curve Pro EQ the next time I fire it up.
