JBL D130 dust cap replacement

Well friends, tonight I scored a pair of JBL D130 woofers. Sorry, I'm not home yet, but I'll post photos once in home.

The previous owner was an older fella who passed. He cut the aluminum dust covers out because he claimed they sounded better that way. I'm interested in replacing them for the sake of restoration, but also because I've heard that those aluminum dust caps help to extend the higher reaches of the speakers.

Is there any validity to his theory on cutting them out?

My second question is this: I've seen cover replacements that glue on to the top (like other dust covers I've replaced) but I also heard something about raising up the woofer with shims and doing some other method. So is this a stick'n'glue or something more involved?

I read here that the aluminum diaphragm is actually attached to the voice coil: http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?25162-New-Dust-Cap-for-D130F-Woofer

upon a closer inspection, it does appear as if the cap is anchored between the cone and the coil. Does anybody have experience getting a cone apart from a coil in order to replace a dust cap like this?

Update in case somebody has the same question down the line:

They attach to the top of the cone just like any other dust cap. I'm not sure why somebody told me they required a lot of work to be replaced, by all accounts they are just stick-ons with rubber cement.

Not rubber cement. Something that sets up very solid/rigid, instead.
