JBL Decade L26

You could try rotating the woofer 180º (turn the cabinet upside down to test) but that's a wing and a prayer repair. If it's not irreparably damaged from playing like that, you could have the surround replaced and the voice-coil aligned properly.

Refoam is kinda weird looking. Almost deterred me from buying them. Upon posting pictures of the refoam, I am sure they will garner interesting comments.:scratch2:
 
Weird re-foam re-surround on JBL L26

Please help me understand what I am looking at. I purchased these speakers this way. Has anyone ever seen a re-foam that looks like this? Is this salvageable? Please help me figure this out. Ask me whatever questions you can come up with.
 
To be honest, that foam looks dried out to me. Plus, looks done wrong in the first place. But my L26's are at home and I'm at work so I cannot verify what I am saying :) I refoamed my 26's and it was an easy job.

That picture is just about too close, but the foam doesn't look good to me.
 
Audio Deacon; is the sound your getting like someone's constantly touching the woofer while they are playing? In addition to the refoam job looking wrong I bet the voice coil isn't centered. Tons of threads on this also JBL's VC is a super tight fit. Use the test tone, 1.5v battery, or take the dust cover (hate to do it) and center that bad boy when you refoam them.

BITD when I was a salesman, we called it the "The Advent Killer".

If I am not mistaken, when they first came out they listed for $126 or $129 each. JBL was fair trade and no discounts were allowed. $126 was around the price for a large Advent at the time (corrections welcomed if needed).

I NEVER had a customer who told me that he was looking at Large Advents and then listened to the L26 end up buying the Advent. NEVER.

Now in all fairness. I'm sure that plenty of people bought the Advent that would never had considered the JBL. But it is fact that every customer that came into my store and told me that that were looking to buy a pair of speakers in the $125 per speaker price range and liked the large Advent ended up buying the L26.

My biggest problem was that I couldn't always keep them in stock!

It just so happens that I have a pair of L26's sitting on top of a pair of NLA's. I dont run them together but I do A B them depending on what Im listening to. The L26's have a better mid but the Advents win hands down on the bottom end. It is not so cut and dry for me.

Try reversing them (Advents on top of the JBLs) and see if your opinion changes. :scratch2:
 
I've had a few pair of OLAs, NLAs and L26s and I would be hard pressed to think of any aspect where the Advents beat the JBLs.
 
JBL's Rock. Advents Rock. Two totally different types of speaker. Acoustic suspension with the Advent and ported with the JBL's. I have had both and liked both sounds. Right now the JBL's are hooked up to my Sansui G-8700DB. Later today I'll fire them up with an old Sansui 7070 someone practically gave me. Try spinning some vinyl and see which one's sound better to your ears!!
 
Can any experts on these speakers describe what the original woofers should look/feel like? These are not paper like my advents. They have clearly been refoamed and have a different dustcap. I bought these on the fly and on a whim, and the guy who sold them clearly had no idea what speakers he had. He said he bought them 12 years ago from a guy he worked with for a long time. He said that the guy he bought them from was NOT the kind of guy who would know how to work on speakers, but he was the original owner. Hmmmm....I wonder if these are the original woofers that were refoamed and then a different style of dustcap was used...or if these are replacement woofers.
 
No need for pics, I just cracked these open and the woofers are cheap Realistic radio shack replacements. It looks like the crossover may have been worked on or replaced too, but I can't be sure yet. The woofers are crap.

The boxes are in great shape, though, and the tweeters are original. This could become a fun project nonetheless, at least I only gave the guy $25. Man, I really am a dolt. That's what you get buying some speakers that you know nothing about, on the fly...
 
Well, let me ask this. I know I can just let the search for original woofers start, or I can consider a more immediate replacement for these woofers...an experimental project of sorts...any thoughts? Replacement woofers or "upgrades," ??? Just wait until I find a set of original woofers?
