JBL L 250 A New Addition To My System

Ok I came home tonight with supplies from work. I stained them with a lighter dye first but felt they needed to be a bit darker and richer. So since I brought home more than one stain I went to the darker one. Im happy that all the faded sides now match and the boxes look uniform on all sides. I thought I might have to tint the faded areas but it's not necessary.:thmbsp:

The clear coat finish is something anyone who wishes to do there wood at home by hand can do. Much better than an oil like Watco. It's called Pour-N-Wipe by Mohawk. Extremely easy to use, durable enough to use on a kitchen table were water and abuse might be present. Dry's for recoat in 4 hours, fills the grain very well because you wipe it into the grain. I am telling you this product is as easy to use as a cream polish but very hard. It will give you the perfect look for vintage gear.

You are also welcome to view my album with all my photos of this speaker here

As I think I've said before, I've also compared them, and I much preferred the JBLs, but to each his own. :dunno:

Oh, those are going to be so nice! Have you decided how to remedy the chipped veneer? Are you going to put the speakers on some sort of feet or risers?

Ya Zonker,

I believe I said the plan was to mount a 1/2" MDF board on the bottom set back a 1/2" from the parameter. But I haven't done it yet, still have not filled the chips either. Im pushing the finishing and speaker repair first. I can fill chips later and touch them up. I want these babies back together now:D so I can hear what they sound like.:music:

They are gorgeous!!!

When are the woofers being done? You are doing them or taking them to a shop?

Excellent progress!

Im going to do the woofers but haven't started yet. I have been a little involved with the finishing. I think I'll have them all back together by this weekend.

I once heard a L250 vs. Kappa 9 shootout:smoke:.
I say distress 'em and show how tough JBL can take a beating and be trendy at the same time:)
Enjoy, it's always fun to get new speakers!

Thank You tubed

I'll be enjoying them very soon.:music:

They require careful set up in general. I've heard them sound good with large and small amps both tube and solid state. They are fairly efficient but would benefit from the control and damping of a large solid state amp. Purists don't like equalizers but in most rooms I've found that they (at least the Ti version) benefit tremendously from some low frequency cut in the 60 - 120hz region. They are such a neutral speaker that any bad relationship between them and the room in the bass region makes them sound dull and lifeless.

Mike

Thanks Mike
I'll soon find out, my c100 pre has no tone control.:music:

Soon to be living large like you Al :thmbsp:

I've been auditioning a new (has been a dealer demo) Perreaux 350 Prisma amp in place of the McIntosh MC300 since this past Friday.
I must say that the big JBL's really shine with that powerful MOSFET amp.
Not that the MC300 is a slouch by any means, it's just that the Perreaux is that much more powerful.
I find no weakness in my 250ti's when driven with an amp from an MC275 or larger.
I had tried them with a Primaluna Prologue Five amp last year, but although the combo sounded nice, it just didn't have the impact that the big JBL's can produce. My M125 mono's on the other hand do drive them with authority.

I'm following your cabinet refinishing intently as mine too have a bit of fading.
Thank you for the detailed procedure.

Hi Al,

So do you think with me running two mono block 275 mk vi I'll push them hard enough ? Or should I think off driving the woofers with a SS amp. I guess I'll know more by this weekend when I can hear them.

This finishing technique is supper easy that Im doing. We have been doing it on a lot of tables that get lots of use. Maintenance after damage is easily repaired.

I will probable dedicate a post on finishing that can be done at home. This one will be the top post. I can instruct you over the phone better if you PM me.

Outstanding suggestion on the Mohawk product. Thanks!

And the cabs are lookin beautiful. I like that the tweeter trim ring looks a little darker and think a slightly darker base to tie it all together would be trick. Oh wait, we've already gone there. :)

Two MC275's would sound awesome!
I tried a friend's lone MC275 with mine and it sounded great.
You'll most likely be ruined for any other speaker after all of this.

Yes, please dedicate a post to your refinishing process. All of us here could benefit from your experience.

Yeah, I was running mine on 250 WPC (Adcom GFA-5800) and enjoyed them thoroughly. But as I recall, Cactus Bob was running something like 750 WPC on his 250Tis, and he highly recommended the extra power. :D

I built these stepped diffusers out of birch ply and used Danish oil to stain (hand sanded with 220, followed by gray Scotch Brite pad, brushed on, wiped off and burnished in with same rag). Could I use the Mohawk wipe-on clear over the Danish oil?

The difference in bass control between a Yamaha PC2002M (260W/ch) and PC4002M (430w/ch) was noticeable on the 250Ti. That said, it wasn't enough to warrant keeping the 4002's so I'm quite happy with the 2002 running the LE14H-1. The 250Ti is OK with just about anything you want to hook up (I've even tried my little Carver TFM-6C at 65w/ch). But it seems to get better and better the higher up the ladder you go. Better bass, more impact, more control etc.

I'll also echo the need to EQ the bass somewhat unless you have a lot of freedom on room placement and treatments. They can put a *lot* of bass energy into a room.

Agreed that it gets better as you go up the ladder. My MC300 puts out 300 watts regardless of impedance due to the Autoformers, but the Perreaux is rated at 420 watts at 8 ohms and just shy of 800 watts at 4 ohms. At slightly more than double the cost of the Mac I would hope it would sound better, and it does. Again, IMHO it would take a lot more money spent on a set of speakers to better these big JBL's.
A few months ago my wife and I went to a local HiFi shop and got to listen to a new pair of Magico Q7's. They did sound impressive. However, we left there very satisfied in knowing that our main system sounds wonderful in comparison and at a fraction of the cost of the $190K that the Magico's alone cost. It may have sounded better than ours (?), but we felt gratified with what we have painstakenly cobbled together at the cost we did. The 250ti's are that good when driven appropriately.

Now, I'll be selling the MC300 so that I can keep this Perreaux.
