So I did try this out, but no luck still. I'll try and check the solder joints for any bad ones. Could it possibly be a bad resistor or would that be ruled out?
After watching this video, I finally found out what the issue is now. The 2.5 ohm 10 watt resistor failed on both speakers. I used alligator clips to bypass it and the mid range came to life.
Yes! Check to be sure the midrange drivers are okay by themselves. You can momentarily touch an AA battery across the terminals to see if you hear static pop.
I'm proud to say that the speakers are now working again! A couple of days ago I received the four replacement Dayton resistors (5.1 ohm 10 watt wired in parallel) and soldered them into the crossovers. Since then I've been listening to the speakers and man do they sound amazing. The time spent repairing was definitely worth it to experience these JBL's.
My problem was the 2.5 ohm resistor on all 4 L110's were faulty, keeping midrange from working. I jumped a wire across it and it worked! I will be replacing all 4.!
So the new capacitors arrived today. I started with the cabinet which only had the 6 uF capacitor replaced. Soldered the new 3uF caps in parallel together and got it soldered to the crossover. Hooked it up to test the speaker and still nothing from the Mid.....
At this point I am very stumped at what is causing the issue. The only thing I can think of is a resistor possibly failing but I am not sure. I don't want to start taking out resistors at random so I would like to hear thoughts from other people. Any help would be appreciated.
So far I have checked these possible areas.
- Turned the L-Pad back and forth to see if the Mid would start working. (Nothing)
- Sprayed Deoxit into the L-Pad and turned it back and forth. (Nothing)
- Jumped pins 2 and 3 on the L-Pad to see if it was an issue with the L-Pad (In this case the Mid still didn't work when the pins were jumped)
- Tested the Mids with a multimeter to check if they were the issue. Both had normal readings.
- Replaced the red and black electrolytic 6uF cap with 2, 3uF polypropylene caps wired in parallel. (Still nothing)
- Also jumped pins 2 and 3 on the L-Pad again with the new caps just in case. (Still nothing)
