JBL L110 Recap

Boy, as someone who is trying to learn this and only doing so at a snail's pace, this whole process can just be confusing as hell!
I could not locate a schematic so I just opened them up and took photos.
There are 2 ea. 18 mfd 100v caps, 36 mfd 100v caps, 6 mfd 100v caps, 4 mfd 200v caps, then there is one big one that I can only see the 12 mfd value but not the voltage. Thats the big cardboard-wrapped one.

see post 8 and lemme know if you have any questions. Parts express is a good place to buy crossover caps. You can even call them. I used solen. Also did mills and janzen resistors. Leave the inductor. Could also leave the paper Mylar cap.

I'm not yet at the level of being able to fully comprehend a schematic honestly. Regardless, it does not give enough specifics about what exact kind of capacitor to purchase as replacements. I found this out when I attempted to order new parts from Parts Express. I simply do not know exactly the ones to order and I was unaware that there are so many varieties! I also don't know which cap is the "Mylar cap" you are referring to. How would one know which one that is? Ugh..I've got so much to learn.

Wait lemme clarify for you

mylar cardboard looking caps. The big cardboard looking ones. This isn’t traditionally what a Mylar cap looks like, but it’s a big cardboard tube stuffed in wax and compromises of the cap.

The schematic should just show a voltage and capacitance rating for the caps. The resistors are just wattage and resistance.

There are all kinds of websites on how to read a schematic.

İ am sorry for writing to old thread.

İ bought jbl l110 from a reatiler. İ am An amateur. The foams are okay.

But i want it sound close to new without changing character.

Can anyone tell me where can i purchase l110 crossover rebuild kit?

Ps: the tweeter has some damage. Does it affect sound? İf yes, can i replace it? İs it something can be purchased?

I bought caps from parts express for mine. You can’t learn anything by buying a kit. The parts are easy to pick based on your budget. Do you want to spend $150 or up to $1000?

@pjrengineer thanks for reply.

Actually i don’t want to pay too much.

For example for my Heresy 2 i bought silver crossover rebuild kit from ciretes which is around 40 pounds.

My purpose is without changing the character of sound, replacing some parts which provides as new sound as possible only.

As foams are in good condition, i think i need only crossover rebuild kit?

İ checked now parts express. İt founds nothing when i searched for Jbl l110x

İs there some company like ciretes provides rebuild kits for specific speakers for my l110?

You would learn something with a crossover schematic and a little research. If you don’t want to take my advice I’m not able to help you.

@pjrengineer i would really wish to learn. But i am captain in Turkish Airlines. İ am out of house almost 3 weeks. İ really don’t have much time. On my free times i have to take care of my family. The only thing that i can do buying parts and having them replaced at a service.

Thanks for your support.

There’s the caps.
12uF and 4uF poly, the rest electrolytic.
I just did a pair last week.

@ivandezande thank you so much. As i am not a tech man :( i will send this list to a website called madisound if they have these ones.
İs your list include only crossover caps or other caps on the speaker if there is another ones?

——-

On the other, i had also sent an e-mail to Madisound. They replied me. İt is in the attached photo. They say the caps going to crossover. So i understand there more caps other than crossover in a speaker.

İ am so sorry for easy questions for you. But this not my proficieny :( and in turkey it is very hard to find someone is good at this stuff.

Thank you all again.

Did you not see the crossover schematic I attached? And the list of values and quantities you need?
Maybe you should just have a shop do it.

Aside - Someone needs to tell Josh at Madisound that caps are +/-20% and it’s crazy to try and parallel caps to get exact.

If you replace the capacitors and resistors then why not upgrade the inductors and the binding posts and wire and so on and so forth. You can do all these things but then to be honest they are no longer sounding like stock speakers. They are sounding like speakers you modified to be yours, sometimes for the better. By making them clearer, do they become more sensitive to the upstream components? All sounds we describe after “recap” are subjective.

Whenever I change the oil for my car, I always change the brake, power steering and coolant fluids to make sure one is not jealous of the others. :biggrin:

@ivandezande ah okay. İ will do the same list as yours. And post here if it is correct. On the other the list you sent me, is the caps and resistor are only for crossover? Or is there any other parts other than crossover to replace inside a speaker?

@pjrengineer sir, that is the point i am trying to learn, without changing the vintage sound character of a speaker, what parts i need to replace. İ have a separate digital system, audiolab 9000 series streamer and amplifier, monitor audio gold 500 6g tower speakers for digital music Qobuz and tidal. But for my TT setup all devices are vintage. İ don’t want any modern device while playing records. İ have jbl l110 in my living room, heresy 2 in bedroom connected to same vintage TT and vintage amp. For heresy there is a company called ciretes. They have drivers, new crossovers. Etc. i think these change the H2 stock sound and changes it. So i ordered crossover rebuild kit silver only. İ did not check the foams yet. Maybe second stuff will be replacing them. That’s all i can do to renew it sound like stock and new without changing its vintage character. Now i want to do same for my JBL. From the list you say, “inductors and the binding posts and wire” if they dont change its stock sound and vintage character, yes of course i would want to replace them also. But as i mentioned before, at my 42 years, i am new to this hobby, and as a pilot i really don’t have much time to learn. Sometimes i try to get help from chatgpt artificial intelligence application but some times it gives wrong information.

To make it short; i just want to know; without changing the stock sound and vintage character, what can i replace on a speaker. For my heresy 2 it is easy as ciretes company provides good solutions. But for jbl there is no. Fortunately you are helping me here. İ appreciate.

@malden :))) if i learn what to change i be happy :)

İ asked chatgpt. The answers are in the attached photos.

My suggestion is to learn how to read a schematic and what the components do. Not change anything. Listen to them. Clean the controls and change the binding posts. Eventually change the crossover components one step at a time and see if you notice a difference. Or mount the crossover to a new board. It’s easier to just modify and assume they are better when starting out in this hobby. But unless you perform testing you are relying on your subjective hearing vs actual measurements. Or worse yet relying on other peoples subjective opinions. Also if you use a separate board you can swap in the new vs old crossover but replacing the parts you cannot go back. It seems you are going down a path I did when I first started into the hobby and looking back I would rather kept them stock. Good luck and most of all have fun.

@pjrengineer
I will definitely learn this one day. But for that, I need serious free time. I will watch videos on YouTube. For example, I will buy a cheap speaker to experiment with, like an A/B comparison between two speakers.

I really appreciate your help. I will order the mentioned parts within a day or two.
