JBL L166 Have I Been Ripped Off???

So I Managed To Pick Up Some JBL L166's Off The Bay For 140$ & Cabs Were Ok Just Needed A Polish & The Grills Were In Good Condition But When They Arrived I Investigated A Little Further And Took The Woofers Out And To My Surprise Someone Had Fitted Eminence Delta 12" Speakers So Im Thinking Where Have The Original 128H Or 122A Alnico's Have Gone ??? My Point Is I Called The Owner & He Says Hes Owned Them From The 70's And I Asked What Happend To The Original Woofers And He Said He Does Not Know But In A Earlier Conversation He Said He Bought Them Brand New From JBL So He Is Blatantly Lying. So My Question Is Do I Keep These And Try To Find Original Woofers And Ask Him To Refund Some Of My Cash Back Or Do I Send Them Back Outright I Look Forward To JBL Fans & Owners To Chime In And Vent There Opinions

Obviously they are NOT the original woofers. Obviously they are NOT as described - and would not be worth anything to a JBL collector -
but you'd have to repack and ship them back and maybe struggle to get your money out from under them. You may or may not find drivers easily.

He may have had surrounds go bad at some point - any JBL that old would have had faulty surrounds ...
maybe had a shop fix the surrounds - maybe THEY swapped out the drivers for a cheap repair,
but either way, it sounds like a ripoff to me.

I did a search and read that BMWCCA said you can "swap in a pair of 128H Woofers - it then becomes a quasi L112" -
(someone has a pair of 128H-1 for sale on ebay for $175/pr and those need surrounds!)
as long as your original Woofs are long gone, maybe that plan would work for you ...

Thanks James I Did Buy Them As A Collective Reason Aswell As For My Musical Pleasure But I Have Spoke To The Seller And He Is Willing To Give Full Refund Or Work With Me Whatever Way So We Can Resolve I Have Seen Woofers On US ebay For Around $250 Refurbed Bare In Mind Im In The UK So After The 250$ Comes Shipping Plus Taxes And Hoping They Arrive In The UK In One Piece !! Knowing FedEx UPS Or USPS They Most Prob Be Destroyed How Are USPS UPS OR FedEx In The USA?
 
$140 is still good deal as the tweeters alone cost that much plus you have one of the best mid drivers as well.

i have seen replacements on usa ebay for around 250$ if i get these L166's for a good price i mean if he refunds most my money back maybe it maybe a gamble to get the original woofers replaced also maybe i can generate some more cash by selling the eminence delta woofers they look brand new and did in all fairness sound really good when i hooked them up but i want the originality im just scared of the shipping getting messed up by usps fedex or ups so whoever i get themoff would have to pack these up in some military precision way i mean how the hell do you protect a speaker in transit surely it can easily rip etc
 
They're not as they were represented in the auction, plain and simple, so I would be filing a complaint with E**Bay/Paypal/whoever. Guy's trying to pull a fast one and deserves to get smacked on the hand with a yardstick.
 
I say, $140 is a fine price for what you actually got. I would sell the woofers and source OEM JBLs.
 
I feel sorry for you man. It drives me insane to hear that original woofers would be taken out of a vintage speaker set, especially if they are JBL. That's probably why he offered so little for them. And on top of that, he lied about buying them new from JBL, because if he did, they would obviously have the factory woofers in them.

There's still $140 worth of speaker there. The comment someone made about them being worthless to a jbl collector is way off base. A true collector would see the rebuild or part-out potential in them. They often sell for $400-$600 when complete and in good condition.

Also, yes, the seller was lying. A lot of people didn't know what to do with the original subs after the surrounds rotted. They tossed them, or tried some horrible DIY repair with tape, or simply threw the whole thing away! This guy pitched the old subs, and he knows it - assuming his story about buying these new is legit.
 
If all else is good with the pair, cabinets grilles then listen to them the way they are until you find a pair of drivers.

True. You could get a partial refund out of this, maybe get $40-$60 back. It happens all the time when there are issues with eBay. I wouldn't get a full refund, though, as you've still got a great pair of speakers that can easily (maybe spending another $200 on) be made complete again.
 
Was the Seller of the L166 UK based as well, or did you pay to ship them further?
I'd ask for half of your purchase price money to be refund ($70 - no idea what you paid for shipping) and you keep them.
Then sell the eminence woofers and try to get either the original woofers or a pair of the 128H woofers that Phil had mentioned.
If they are clean and you are handy, could be worth your while to try and rebuild them to stock condition.

yes he is uk based he also said i can have a full refund but im thinking to try claw some money back and sell the eminence delta woofers inside and try buy some original woofers
