JBL L65 and L166 Question

I have L166 Horizons in the process of rehab. They sound great but have noticeably damaged grills. These may go in the living room so I need something that looks good, and that means DIY I think.

Something like the Jubal L65 grill would look more JBL-ish than something that is just flat I think.

Request 1: Any suggestions on alternate DIY grill shapes?

Request 2: Jubal owners: Could you please post pics of the inside frame of the grills enough to DIY similar frames?

A few years ago I bought an old pair of L-65 grilles that were in pretty bad shape. Horrible "custom" fabric, crumbling corners and even a couple fractures.

I have them in the garage somewhere. I'll try and take some pix and measurements tomorrow. Replicating the wood part will be really straightforward. But fabricating the metal riser ring that stands off the frame will be a lot more of a challenge.
 
@HTWillie that would be great - many thanks for whatever you can do. If it helps, I will need to make up my own measurements because the L65 is much bigger than the L166.
 
@turboyam They sure do look very JBLish. Nice job. I also like the Mission-style feet.

Any chance of a pic of the back of the grill?
 
I first used magnets to hold them in place but, they were too heavy ( they would slide down a bit), so i installed a pair of grilles pegs. Mine are 18 x 30 inches tho!!!. I made this recess (on the left pictured), so i could staple the grey cloth.
 
Wow that is really something! Looks like 1 piece MDF with a glued-on Chippendale shape for the angles/dowel?

Yep. The round dowell has to be supported in the middle cuz the cloth tension will eventually arc it.
These are easy to DIY, just take your time!.
