JBL LE14H1 recone kits - where are they?

JBL has not made a run on these in a long time as far as I know. I'm sure you can find them on someones shelf if you are persistent. Definitely not easy to find. Make sure they use fresh glue if a shop does the work. Any kits left should have dried up glue in them. There is not any PROPER aftermarket replacements based on everything I have read. It needs to be a JBL kit or you are testing your luck.

They're white and I want black. 
The spider on one is not in awesome shape.
Brake oil softened up the old surrounds, but I'm bothered by the slightly saggy spider on the one speaker.
There are no aftermarket recone kits?
I could have sworn I found some for $80/each the other day but now I can't find 'em.

A bad spider is reason enough. I have a driver with the spider replaced and it's way too stiff compared to a new OEM kit.
I didn't state that there were not any aftermarket kits, just none that I would buy. Orange County may have aftermarket if you want to give them a try.

JBL Has not made a run of 14-1's in about 3-5 years AFAIK.
If I were you I would look for another pair on the bay.
Last price for a recone was about $275 ea.
Aftermarket will just dissapoint. A world class woofer like that should remain factory! JMO
Maybe GordonW could direct you to the correct parts to do the repair?

I had a pair with rotted surrounds and sagging spiders. When I learned the cost of a proper rebuild they went in the garbage.
Has anyone tried an aftermarket cone kit on the LE14 or similar JBL speakers?
How badly does it effect performance?
If I found aftermarket kits for $130/each shipped, would it be worth it?
I'm not sure that I want to buy a bunch of LE14's off eBay and end up with the same problem on those.

I was thinking more along the lines of... I am using the LE14A to build a DIY hifi speaker.
Is a recone kit going to kill the audio quality of the LE14A?
Or should I ditch them and buy some new woofers like the KappaLite 3012LF for $250/each?
New woofers = $500

Just found out the recone kit is actually $220 shipped.
At that price, I think I'll give it a shot. Maybe do as you suggested and rebuild one and use a woofer tester on it to compare against the second original one.
Anyone in Austin have a woofer tester I could borrow?

I recently reconed a pair of LE14A (same kit as LE14H, other than voice coil, essentially), and managed to duplicate the original T/S parameters for the woofer, pretty much exactly. It did require the creation of a "mass ring", ala the 2235H and such (a practice that JBL themselves has used interchangeably with the Aquaplas coating, in several models, including the 2231A, 128H, 122A and such). Given that, I'd strongly believe that the LE14H-1 could be dealt with that way, just as well.

You better be certain that the LE14H-1 kit will even fit in a LE14A frame. IIRC, the LE14A was an Alnico driver where the LE14H-1 was ferrite. The gap width and depth might be quite a bit different, or they might be the same.
